Review

“How to Have a Good Day is a smart, thorough, and eminently practical book. Just about every page offers a science-based tip to help you become better off — or, in many cases, just plain better.” —Daniel H. Pink, author of To Sell is Human and Drive   "Behavioral science has come of age in recent years, and it has begged for a world-class translator. Now we have one. Caroline Webb’s peerless translation of the behavioral sciences into tools for shaping the quality of our day is the book we’ve been waiting for. Play with just 2% of the ideas in this book, and you might just end up changing your life's course. Words like 'magisterial' come to mind. Bravo." —Tom Peters, co-author of award-winning bestseller In Search of Excellence   “Finally, a practical book based on evidence. How to Have a Good Day is grounded in state-of-the-art research on behavior and neuroscience, and animated with vivid examples from professionals who have successfully applied Webb’s advice. It might even leave you looking forward to your next tricky conversation or challenging task as an opportunity to try out her tips." —Adam Grant, Wharton professor and New York Times bestselling author of Give and Take and Originals   "How to Have a Good Day is an extraordinary book — a wonderful mix of science, practical advice, and stories based on Caroline Webb's years of experience helping a huge range of people transform their professional lives for the better. Every chapter is studded with engaging real-world examples that ring true and illustrate how to make the most of the book's suggestions. Whatever your personal definition of a good day, you'll have more of them after reading this book.”   —Susan Cain, author of Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking and co-founder of Quiet Revolution   "Almost all of us work in environments where our time is stretched far too thin. How to Have a Good Day helps us rise to that challenge, containing ideas and techniques that show us how to be at our own personal and professional best every day." —Tony Hsieh, New York Times bestselling author of Delivering Happiness and CEO of Zappos.com, Inc.   "Webb has given us a great gift: she has synthesized all the advice coming out of labs around the world, filtered it for quality, and illustrated it with well-chosen examples. The appendices alone will save you dozens of hours per year — particularly on email — and help you create more great days for yourself. This is the only self-improvement book you will need in the next five years."  —Jonathan Haidt, NYU-Stern School of Business, author of The Happiness Hypothesis and The Righteous Mind   "There's a big difference between having a great, productive day and having a bland, ordinary one. Caroline Webb deftly explains how to squeeze the most out of twenty-four hours, to create more of the former. Very useful."  —Sir Michael Moritz, Chairman of Sequoia Capital  “A powerful toolkit to improve both work and wellbeing. From email and meetings to making the most out of every day, Webb shows us not just how to be more productive, but how to be more fulfilled along the way.”   —Jonah Berger, Wharton professor and bestselling author of Contagious and Invisible Influence   "Imagine what your life would be like if you could simply 'choose' to have a good day. Webb makes a powerful case that we can. Best of all, she shows us how. Webb gets her arms around the vast body of information coming at us from behavioral economics, psychology, and neuroscience, and distills the best of it into the kind of practical advice a wise friend might offer. It's the book Daniel Kahneman might write if he'd been working in the business world for twenty years. Masterful."   —Douglas Stone and Sheila Heen, co-authors of the bestselling Difficult Conversations and Thanks for the Feedback   "This is a brilliantly useful book. Caroline Webb has a quite exceptional range of organisational experience. She uses it to review a vast span of the latest academic 'thinking about thinking' in the clearest possible way. And then she applies this wisdom to help us all sort out the frazzle of our own working day. Her approach is utterly straightforward but based in deep insights into how human beings really behave."  —Peter Day, BBC Business Correspondent, Presenter of In Business and Global Business   “Years ago I was a rower, and in sport everyone knows you need to pay attention to yourself, your intent and your mindset, to be at your best. This book reminded me of all I learned from those days about the importance of having the right attitude. I found it a great, practical guide to applying these and other helpful psychological insights in business – something we do all too infrequently. Built solidly on the latest research, brought to life with storytelling, it offers many simple ways to boost your performance and give you a better day at work – and if you’re a leader, it will show you how to make sure that your colleagues are on top form, too." -—Matt Brittin, President of Google Europe, Middle East & Africa, former rowing World Championship medalist and British Olympic team member "How to Have a Good Day speaks to every area of your workday and shows how making a few critical adjustments to your everyday behavior will leave you amazed by the results. By applying the lessons in Webb's book, all based on science, you’ll maximize your performance and be more energized than ever." — Marshall Goldsmith, bestselling author of Triggers, MOJO and What Got You Here Won’t Get You There    “An absolute must read for the millions of people struggling to overcome the challenges and stresses of work and family life. Caroline Webb’s deep dive into ground-breaking new behavioral and neuroscience research gives us the tools to empower everyone to have a better, more fulfilling day, every day. Finally, we can say, ‘Good morning,’ and mean it!” —Linda Kaplan Thaler, Chairman of Publicis Kaplan Thaler and co-author of Grit to Great “The quest for self-improvement usually takes place on a well-trodden path, with many different gurus offering guidance. But the advice, in addition to being contradictory, often lacks solid foundations. Fortunately, How to Have a Good Day is the breakout exception to this category. The evidence and examples packed inside its pages leave the reader in no doubt that Webb's advice will make a real difference.  Better days lead to better lives, and this extraordinary book will lead to both.” —Chris Guillebeau, New York Times bestselling author of The $100 Startup and The Happiness of Pursuit    “In How to Have a Good Day, Caroline Webb offers practical advice rooted in the latest science and psychology for anyone who wants to take a more intentional approach to life and enjoy the greater productivity and success that comes from doing so. If you want to stop reacting to your life and start living it, this book will get you moving in the right direction." —Bryce G. Hoffman, author of American Icon

For those of us without the time, means, or gumption to hire a career/life coach, there is help. Profound, tangible, and accessible help from this book. And blessedly, it requires little heavy lifting on our part. It turns out, the ways we get in our own way, the procrastinating, time-wasting, goal-sabotaging, can be squelched. While we’ve been suffering, a small army of academics has been figuring stuff out. It might in how our brains function, our evolutionary tendencies, or the habits (good or bad) we pick up.To be clear on what “How to Have a Good Day” is not: it requires no deep plumbing of the psyche, it pushes no “alternative” way of thinking. The topics are well known. We all know procrastination is bad, we may know multi-tasking is a fallacy. But why? And what can I do about it today? The author, professional career coach, researcher, and reader of 600(!) books on the topic of behavioral science, has distilled the best, most illuminating discoveries to help those of us who know better, but can’t do better. As declared in the title, yes, there is a measure of science-talk, but this is no science text. HTHAGD kicks off with an introductory primer on the concepts in play. Yet rest assured any haughty terminology has been thoroughly humanized, without being cerebrally neutered. Though even the author allows the book is navigable even if you skip chapter one.The remaining chapters drill down on seven topics, such as productivity, resilience, etc. Each topic is loosely pegged to a real individual’s overcoming of their respective obstacle (e.g. priorities). Webb threads in the most revelatory science and explains why this subject’s course of action worked. She then details the actionable things we can do (a specific breathing technique, a check-list, a mantra, and so on) to bring into our day. All the “tips” are packaged at the end of the chapter. So indeed, the book is built to be revisited by topic, say, two years from now on your worst day ever at work.An exhaustively comprehensive Rx for our everyday challenges. At once probing of our mental innards, and plainly, wonderfully practical. We know it does us no good to have another wasted day. With this book, we need no longer search in anguish for what to do about it. Fantastically beneficial from the first sit-down.

This book should suck. Really. The title clearly over-promises (“How To Have a Good Day,” indeed) and the text attempts three of the most difficult non-fiction high-wire acts: popularizing science without making stupid errors, presenting business advice that doesn’t trigger your bulls*** detector, and giving self-help tips that don’t fall off into either banality or featherbrained woo.Nearly impossible. And yet, somehow, Caroline Webb has pulled it off.“How to Have a Good Day” is a meticulously documented, step-by-step approach to leveraging contemporary research in cognitive science and behavioral economics to solve the real problems that keep us from being effective — and happy — in our day-to-day jobs and lives. And it’s not aimed at helping you “feel” better, but, rather, outlines a rigorously pragmatic approach to actually *doing* better: analyzing situations more effectively, making better decisions, and communicating with others with empathy and impact.Every piece of advice comes with a footnoted scientific study — often more than one — buttressing its claims. And Webb, a former partner at a management consulting firm, peppers the text with mini-case studies, anecdotes from business leaders across a wide spectrum of industries that reinforce each of the learnings. Taken together, these present a compelling argument that the advice doesn’t just work in the lab, but in the rubber-meets-the-road environments of the shop floor and the conference room.Webb opens the book with a section on the science. There are some familiar big ideas (the brain’s two-systems of deliberate thought and automatic or pre-conscious process; the fight-flight-freeze response which can keep us open to discovery or shut us down in defensive threat reaction; and the mind-body loop in which influence can go both ways) which Webb will weave throughout the book. If there is a core theme, it would be that by better understanding how our brain processes the world, we can become aware of and avoid the shortcuts and pitfalls of our unconscious biases and blind spots — and in so doing, increase the odds of our having successful interactions. (And that, often, it can be as simple an act as setting intentions that alerts the brain to the salient features it should be picking out.)If you’re familiar with cognitive science (or phenomenology) some of this may be sound obvious, but Webb’s skill is in taking these insights and showing how they lead to dysfunction in our everyday lives. We do not directly experience the world, but rather offload much of our administrative processing to sub-conscious systems — and therein lies the problem: we make snap judgements, improperly weight data, and can miss things that are literally right in front of our eyes. One example Webb uses to demonstrate this kind of inattentional blindness is the famous “gorilla in the basketball game” video (if you’re not familiar, here’s a helpful NPR backgrounder: [...] ). Webb offers a variety of tested methods for re-focusing our brain’s attention, keeping us in a creative, open state, and engaging the teams around us in ways that help keep them working at their full potential. Hint: It can be as simple as using the “yes…and” familiar to anyone who’s done improv comedy to keep other team members from going into the “amygdala hijack” of defensive mode. One weird trick I found particularly compelling was harnessing our social brain to solve abstract logic puzzles. Webb uses the example of the Wason selection task (see Wikipedia: [...]), in which you have four cards, showing D, F, 3, and 7, and are asked which cards you would need to turn over to test the truth of the assertion that any card with a “D” on one side must have a “3” on the other. A majority of people get this wrong. But then Webb suggests reframing it in social terms:“You’re a bartender. You have to make sure that anyone drinking beer in your bar is over twenty-one, or you could lose your license. Each of the cards below represents information about four of your patrons. One side of the card shows what they’re drinking, and the other side of the card shows their (real) age. Which card or cards to you need to turn over to see if the twenty-one-and-over rule is being violated?” The cards are: Beer, Coke, 25, and 16.Three times as many people get this right, because they’re leveraging their social knowledge. And as Webb points out, we can easily apply this framing to everyday conceptual challenges to provide extra processing power. And that’s just one cherry-picked example. The 300 pages of this book are packed with equally powerful bits of advice.Webb conveys this all with style and wit, in prose that is at once warm and unpretentious and yet totally at home with the complexities of the evidence she marshals to support her arguments. It is well-written down to the footnotes, and contains two helpful appendices on applying the book’s insights to the two main productivity killers of the business world, meetings and e-mail. I came away with half-a-dozen ideas for things to do differently (some as simple as single-tasking and batching the times I respond to e-mails) and I can virtually guarantee that you’ll find things that will make your days more productive and, yes, happier.Full disclosure: I used to work at the same company as Ms. Webb’s husband, but I have never met her.

A number of years ago, Wilderness Press published a series of 50 Best Short Hikes, guides meant for families and really almost everyone. The Utah National Parks selection was one of the best sellers in the series, but author Ron Adkison has passed on, and Wilderness Press has brought in Greg Witt to write a new version of this book. He has done a marvelous job. Yes, the book remains true to the original series and focuses on walks the whole family can enjoy. But these are spectacular hikes, and any hiker of any ability level will find something to captivating in this book, including die hard exercise enthusiasts who would normally shy away from a book with the word "short" in the title.Utah's national parks are managed with day hikers in mind. Backpacking is often an option, of course, but water sources are scarce and unreliable, and often the best scenery is fairly close at hand anyway. Visitors to Arches, for example, can take in much of the park in an extended day, and one of the best features of this book is that Witt offers a "park in a day" preface to each chapter so visitors coming for spring break, probably the best time to visit most of these parks, can get the maximum enjoyment for their time. Utah is not that easily accessible to me, and books like this are ideal for my type of exploration. Often, you can get a better feel for a park by doing two or three short hikes than one long one in any event. And one cannot quarrel with the hike selection: Park Avenue and Devil's Garden in Arches, The Queen's Garden-Navajo Loop in Bryce, Mesa Arch and Grand View Point in Canyonlands, and Hickman Bridge in Capitol Reef. Virtually every one of my favorite trails appears in this book. Each park gets about 10 trails, with Zion (correctly) meriting slightly more. Mileages are accurate, sketch maps adequate, and the side bars on natural history make the text all the more enjoyable. But most importantly, this book gets you out of your car and onto the trails in short order, allowing you to experience the best of each park. And what makes it a great book is that if you use it once, you are sure to want to use it again. I know my week long visit this year has whetted my appetite for more, and I have avidly read, and reread, the route descriptions in this fine little volume. I can hardly wait to use it again next year. That is the mark of a great hiking guide. Get it.

Another 5 star offering! We spend a lot of time in southern Utah, in and out of the National Parks. This book guides us to the best in fairly short hikes as opposed to hikes of 2 or 3 days length. The directions for reaching the trail heads are concise and accurate. The descriptions of what to expect on the hike are appreciated. A good investment with a return of tons of good information.

The book accurately describes the trails and gives a good indication of their difficulty and the trails' special features. It was fun to read about the trails ahead of time and think about what we might want to try. We spent a day at Bryce Canyon and 4 days at Zion and found that the trails in those parks were clearly marked, so the book trail maps were not really needed, and the park free publications gave us much of the same information about difficulty and interest points. The book was not needed as a carry-on in our backpacks, but it was a helpful resource in planning.

I used this guide as a companion on a trip last to Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. It gives some great information on specific hikes, and pointed me toward the most rewarding. With the background information in this guide, I was able to predetermine my hikes ahead of time instead of wasting precious time while on vacation. Nice book, good location information, and fantastic hiking time estimates. I have hiked 13 of the 50, and they were all amazing. Cannot wait to fulfill the balance.

In preparing for our first trip to Utah, this book was great as we planned day hikes in the five national parks. Recommended by Greg's daughter, Tessa, at their guide company, Alpenwild, I purchased the book before the trip to tag hikes that looked interesting. While in the parks, the very detailed descriptions of the hikes allowed us to choose two or even three that would fit into our plans for the day. Where possible, we were choosing hikes with the greatest elevation gain, and the book provided us with the details we needed. From Devil's Garden trail in Arches to Hidden Canyon in Zion, the book helped us make the best of our time in the five parks.

Yes at this time it very much met my needs. I'm preparing to take a months vacation out in Utah 's canyon/arches area. This book gave me a good idea of what to expect and how to take the best advantage of what is available. I am a Senior age camper but the book list some trails I'm sure I can handle. I would very much recommend this book for someone planning to travel the area.

We used this guide to help select which hikes to do in Utah’s National Parks. Good overview, and background info but be sure to also consult the visitors guide you get at the park office since some great hikes are not listed in this book. Also take the trail ratings with a grain of salt. A few rated moderate were actually pretty strenuous. Wish some of the pix were in color instead of B&W.

I just returned from a trip to all 5 of Utah's national parks and this guide was indispensable. Since I had limited time in each park, I wanted to hike the best trails and be aware of what I was getting into. The temperature was often in the 90's and I felt comfortable choosing a trail that was doable in the heat. For instance, I hiked the Mesa Arch trail in 99° heat and knowing that the difficulty rating was a 1 (a short easy walk), elevation change was only 80' and average hiking time was 20-30 minutes and saw a lovely sight I would have otherwise probably skipped without the book. I enjoyed the descriptions as well, telling me what scenic mountain or canyon I was gazing upon.I found it a very good trail companion.

Review

“Michael Sandel's What Money Can't Buy is a great book and I recommend every economist to read it, even though we are not really his target audience. The book is pitched at a much wider audience of concerned citizens. But it taps into a rich seam of discontent about the discipline of economics.... The book is brimming with interesting examples which make you think.... I read this book cover-to-cover in less than 48 hours. And I have written more marginal notes than for any book I have read in a long time.” ―Timothy Besley, Journal of Economic Literature“Provocative. . . What Money Can't Buy [is] an engaging, compelling read, consistently unsettling and occasionally unnerving. . . [It] deserves a wide readership.” ―David M. Kennedy, Democracy“Brilliant, easily readable, beautifully delivered and often funny. . . an indispensable book on the relationship between morality and economics.” ―David Aaronovitch, The Times (London)“Sandel is probably the world's most relevant living philosopher.” ―Michael Fitzgerald, Newsweek“In a culture mesmerized by the market, Sandel's is the indispensable voice of reason…. What Money Can't Buy. . . must surely be one of the most important exercises in public philosophy in many years.” ―John Gray, New Statesman“[An] important book. . . Michael Sandel is just the right person to get to the bottom of the tangle of moral damage that is being done by markets to our values.” ―Jeremy Waldron, The New York Review of Books“The most famous teacher of philosophy in the world, [has] shown that it is possible to take philosophy into the public square without insulting the public's intelligence. . .[He] is trying to force open a space for a discourse on civic virtue that he believes has been abandoned by both left and right.” ―Michael Ignatieff, The New Republic“[Sandel]is such a gentle critic that he merely asks us to open our eyes. . . Yet What Money Can't Buy makes it clear that market morality is an exceptionally thin wedge. . . Sandel is pointing out. . . [a] quite profound change in society.” ―Jonathan V. Last, The Wall Street Journal“What Money Can't Buy is the work of a truly public philosopher. . . [It] recalls John Kenneth Galbraith's influential 1958 book, The Affluent Society. . .Galbraith lamented the impoverishment of the public square. Sandel worries about its abandonment--or, more precisely, its desertion by the more fortunate and capable among us. . .[A]n engaging, compelling read, consistently unsettling. . . it reminds us how easy it is to slip into a purely material calculus about the meaning of life and the means we adopt in pursuit of happiness.” ―David M. Kennedy, Democracy: A Journal of Ideas“[Sandel] is currently the most effective communicator of ideas in English.” ―The Guardian“Michael Sandel is probably the most popular political philosopher of his generation. . .The attention Sandel enjoys is more akin to a stadium-filling self-help guru than a philosopher. But rather than instructing his audiences to maximize earning power or balance their chakras, he challenges them to address fundamental questions about how society is organized. . . His new book [What Money Can't Buy] offers an eloquent argument for morality in public life.” ―Andrew Anthony, The Observer (London)“What Money Can't Buy is replete with examples of what money can, in fact, buy. . . Sandel has a genius for showing why such changes are deeply important.” ―Martin Sandbu, Financial Times“One of the leading political thinkers of our time…. Sandel's new book is What Money Can't Buy: The Moral Limits of Markets, and I recommend it highly. It's a powerful indictment of the market society we have become, where virtually everything has a price.” ―Michael Tomasky, The Daily Beast“To understand the importance of [Sandel's] purpose, you first have to grasp the full extent of the triumph achieved by market thinking in economics, and the extent to which that thinking has spread to other domains. This school sees economics as a discipline that has nothing to do with morality, and is instead the study of incentives, considered in an ethical vacuum. Sandel's book is, in its calm way, an all-out assault on that idea…. Let's hope that What Money Can't Buy, by being so patient and so accumulative in its argument and its examples, marks a permanent shift in these debates.” ―John Lancaster, The Guardian“Sandel is among the leading public intellectuals of the age. He writes clearly and concisely in prose that neither oversimplifies nor obfuscates…. Sandel asks the crucial question of our time: ‘Do we want a society where everything is up for sale? Or are there certain moral and civic goods that markets do not honor and money cannot buy?'” ―Douglas Bell, The Globe and Mail (Toronto)“Deeply provocative and intellectually suggestive…. What Sandel does…is to prod us into asking whether we have any reason for drawing a line between what is and what isn't exchangeable, what can't be reduced to commodity terms…. [A] wake-up call to recognize our desperate need to rediscover some intelligible way of talking about humanity.” ―Rowan Williams, Prospect“There is no more fundamental question we face than how to best preserve the common good and build strong communities that benefit everyone. Sandel's book is an excellent starting place for that dialogue.” ―Kevin J. Hamilton, The Seattle Times“Poring through Harvard philosopher Michael Sandel's new book. . . I found myself over and over again turning pages and saying, 'I had no idea.' I had no idea that in the year 2000, 'a Russian rocket emblazoned with a giant Pizza Hut logo carried advertising into outer space.'. . . I knew that stadiums are now named for corporations, but had no idea that now 'even sliding into home is a corporate-sponsored event.'. . . I had no idea that in 2001 an elementary school in New Jersey became America's first public school 'to sell naming rights to a corporate sponsor.' Why worry about this trend? Because, Sandel argues, market values are crowding out civic practices.” ―Thomas Friedman, New York Times“An exquisitely reasoned, skillfully written treatise on big issues of everyday life.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)“In his new book, Michael Sandel --the closest the world of political philosophy comes to a celebrity -- argues that we now live in a society where ‘almost everything can be bought and sold.' As markets have infiltrated more parts of life, Sandel believes we have shifted from a market economy to ‘a market society,' turning the world -- and most of us in it -- into commodities. And when Sandel proselytizes, the world listens…. Sandel's ideas could hardly be more timely.” ―Rosamund Urwin, Evening Standard (London)

Given who Sandel is and his previous body of work, I bought this book expecting a deeper exploration about the morality of economics and the limits of its underlying utilitarian framework (and its implicit mathematical ordering eg Pareto optimality and the like). Instead, Sandel generally picks interesting - but extreme - cases such as paying drug addicts to undergo sterilization to make two narrow points about markets corrupting that which is traded or making an assumption that willingness to pay can be divorced from ability to pay. In addition, he doesn’t do much to deepen his analysis of these two points - he merely points out a myriad of situations where they are present. Consequently, while his argument is valid and interesting, a lack of breadth and depth made this purchase less satisfying than it could have been.

Having seen Michael Sandel on TV and having found his intellectual clarity and gifts breath taking I simply had to read something he had written. This book is no disappointment. His writing on the subject of economic views on life is brilliant. Clear, easy to follow and profoundly challenging as he discusses the awful reality of the commodification of much of life in the western world . His chapter on gifts and their meaning alone is enough to recommend this book as a great read for anyone who has some issues with the way the world in the west is heading. He argues for a human side to our deliberations. The need for compassion rather than an economic explanation for everything.

Michael Sandel is unsurpassed in writing books that are delightfully accessible while being intellectually rigorous. What Money Can't Buy lacks the academic references to classical thinkers that were in his book Justice: What's the Right Thing to Do, which is a shame, but it is still one of the most thought-provoking books I have read in a long time.Sandel's subject is money, specifically how monetary incentives and disincentives are being used today in a wide array of realms where money was not a factor in the past. Sandel is a philosopher, not an economist or political scientist, and so he asks, "What does this mean? And why should I care?" As he says in the introduction, "to decide what money should--- and should not ---be able to buy, we have to decide what values should govern the various domains of social and civic life. How to think this through is the subject of this book."To explore the implications of the expansion of the role of markets in our lives, What Money Can't Buy considers two primary aspects: fairness and corruption. The first aspect, fairness, is the more obvious: a wealthier individual will not be affected by a societal incentive/disincentive as much as a poor one. Granted, true, but I do not need a Harvard professor to tell me so. The second aspect is the more interesting: does the use of monetary factors corrupt our sense of values? Are there basic human rights and feelings that should be immune from market manipulation? An interesting example is that of a Swiss town that was a potential site for a nuclear waste dump. The town was a very good site for such a facility, and 51% of the town residents said they would accept it. They were then asked if they would accept the dump if authorities offered to pay an annual inducement of over $8000 per person. The rate of acceptance fell from 51% to 25%. Apparently the residents did not like having the issue turned from one of civic altruism into a pecuniary matter. People do believe that there are issues in which money should not play a role. The book's prolific examples range from Bruce Springsteen concert tickets to paying for an upgraded prison cell (!) to cap-and-trade. I especially loved the Springsteen example. People were scalping tickets to a Springsteen concert in New Jersey; you may or may not feel this is unethical. However, if you are also told that Springsteen deliberately kept ticket prices low because he is from NJ and wanted ordinary people to be able to come, AND this cost him an estimated $4 million in ticket revenue, does this affect your opinion?Although I thought Sandel's examples were well-chosen, thought-provoking, and enjoyable, I wish the actual discussion of the philosophical implications of the lessons to be learned had been more extensive. He made ME think, but I'd like to have heard more about what HE thinks. The book was fairly short and over too soon.

Sandel has all the credentials that make for a fine commentary on modern American commercial society. His deep sense of what constitutes justice informs his many examples in the book of how businesses and corporations have stolen the public arena for their advertisements. He clearly describes how this creeping phenomenon has taken over the commons and usurped public spaces for their capitalistic messages. According to dispassionate marketing theories, these intrusions make sense, in the context of maximizing efficiency and promoting the common good. Sandel points out, however, that the cost is a loss of fairness and a warped idea of what community should be.

Sandel's book provides a key insight into the shift and influence of the Neo-Liberal (total faith in the free market) trend in economics. In his intro he provides a powerful statement into this shift. He states that "we" may be moving from a society that has a market-driven economy to a free-market society. The distinction is very important because the shift means that many aspects of our society (procreation, pollution, education, etc.) that are value-laden are now treated as commodities like soap, cars and pork-bellies.Sandel offers no solutions, but provides key arguments on both sides showing what a slippery slope this trend is. His analysis is excellent in showing the issue underlying each argument, and in doing so, the reader can cut through the brambles of rhetoric and view the issue in clearer terms. His writing is clear and, as mentioned above, he provides no answers, but rather forces the reader to come to their own position given all the "facts." This is a must read for people to begin to think about important moral decisions in this society and not be swayed by loud-mouthed media "pundits."

About the Author

Koos Stadler has been a career officer in the South African National Defence Force for more than 30 years. Twenty-four of these he served in the elite South African Special Forces, better known as the “Recces” - spending 10 years in active service during the long drawn-out guerilla war against the then South West Africa Peoples’ Organisation (SWAPO) on the border between Namibia and Angola. Stadler conducted many exceptionally sensitive missions, often facing extreme conditions of hunger, thirst, loneliness and danger. Fear was a constant companion and Stadler does not shy away from acknowledging this and sharing his innermost thoughts in the pages of Recce. He ended his career on a high note during a 4-year tenure as Defence Attaché to Saudi Arabia where he spent much of his time exploring the desert. During a 200 km solo hike through the Empty Quarter, one of the most barren stretches of sand on earth, he relived his small teams experiences and in his own words “buried the last of his fears in the sand”.

Good Read. Koos Stadler is Honest & Frank about his Feelings & Fear. This is Something some Authors won't admit to. He gives one some insight into the Selection & Training Courses. I have a Friend that served with the 44 Para Brigade Pathfinder Company, so I really liked this book.

Easy to read biography and book about small team operations in less known conflict between Republic of South Africa against Soviet Union and Cuba.

By far the best personal account of a Special Forces operator I have read. Well written, honest and enthralling. A perfect blend of military detail and personal story.

If you know anything at all about soldiering, you will understand how difficult these missions were.I got scared reading in bed.It is one thing to operate in a group, and quite another when it gets down to one or two or three.Try it.Absolute top of the scale special forces work, unmatched anywhere else. These guys had basically zero logistic support when it got down to it, and they were fighting the whole world as well.Superbly told, and humbly told.......which is a characteristic of a man who could actually do this work, and come back alive time and again. No grandiose rah rah rah as is seen way too often in modern military books.

Incredible tales about a not so well known war against comunism un southern Africa.

I enjoyed every bit of this book an so many lessons for life about not giving up an pursuing your dreams, one of the better books I have read

This is a book that comes back to you when you are in bed late at night, reliving those acts of bravery by a young man that was apart from his physical powers, just another young man.

really interesting on how they did their training and missions that they went on. I enjoyed the book!!

That could be a character summary. Reid is immediately certain of his feelings, which given his past seems a bit weird. While Rachel is far more wary, which given her belief that it was all a dream is understandable I guess. In all it was a good story that I’d read again. I wish Rachel had been more likeable throughout the story, but she comes around in the end. Please note that I am only reviewing the manga version of this story. I have not read the original novel and as such I have no opinion on it. When I have read both versions of a story there will sometimes be differences between the two that can cause me to feel very differently about the two versions.

From the Inside Flap

From one of our most gifted writers on the natural world comes a stunning exploration of a unique landscape and the improbable and endangered animal that makes its home there.Rick Bass first made a name for himself as a writer and seeker of rare, iconic animals, including the grizzlies and wolves of the American West. Now he’s off on a new, far-flung adventure in the Namib of southwest Africa on the trail of another fascinating, vulnerable species. The black rhino is a three-thousand-pound, squinty-eyed giant that sports three-foot-long dagger horns, lives off poisonous plants, and goes for days without water.Human intervention and cutting-edge conservation saved the rhinos—for now—from the brink of extinction brought on by poaching and war. Against the backdrop of one of the most ancient and harshest terrains on earth, Bass, with his characteristic insight and grace, probes the complex relationship between humans and nature and meditates on our role as both destroyer and savior. In the tradition of Peter Matthiessen’s The Tree Where Man Was Born, Bass captures a haunting slice of Africa, especially of the “black” rhinos that glow ghostly white in the gleaming sun.

Although it gets quite "wordy" at times, I really had no trouble visualizing his words and experience. I think it help to have a map of the area he is talking about to appreciate the book more. We are headed to Namibia in a few days, and I feel that this book will enrich that experience. He doesnt really encounter the rhino until 3/4 of the way through the book, but that is half of the fun. His descriptions of the other humans in his story are rich. I felt there was quite a bromance going on with one of the characters, in the end you find out why. You will be moved.Mr. Bass shifting his writing between his concern for his grizzlies in the USA and that of the black rhino in Namibia really drives home the need for our concerns for the environment and conservation.

I agree with previous reviews that said there is not much about rhinos or Namibia but plenty about the author's feelings. Definitely not a good source for anyone who is interested in Namibia or rhinos. Indeed, a rhino sighting doesn't even occur until page 150. I trudged through or skipped numerous sections filled with philosophical soul searching and rhetorical questions.

This is a philosophical treatise with the Namibia black rhinos as a central theme.

This was an interesting and informative read, a must for anyone travelling to Namibia or interested in the plight of the rhino.

"The Black Rhinos of Namibia" appear infrequently and fleetingly in this rambling reminiscence of a sojourn the author made to a rather small part of that country several years before the appearance of this book. The disparity of many of its passages suggests their having been culled from a journal to fit on pages among recollections of numerous times and places. The work is so distinctly personal as to manifest the author's conversations with himself - the essence of any good journal. The reader is taken wherever the author has been and treated to his innermost thoughts there, regardless of their disjunct and inchoate state. The appraisal of the book one renders is highly dependent upon one's expectations, objectives, prejudices. As a planner and leader of African wildlife safaris, I am concerned for the impression left on the reader who may aspire to see wildlife in Namibia or other African countries. The experience related by the author throughout much of the book requires considerable expense (or fortunate invitation) while offering rather long odds of realizing one's objective. In his Epilogue the author writes disparagingly of Etosha National Park where I've seen a black rhino with a young calf near a road when neither ran from the close encounter. Lodges in the heart of the park provide accommodation at reasonable cost, although I prefer Halali and Okaukuejo to Namutoni, the fort where the author and Dennis stayed. Park visitors are virtually assured of seeing far more wildlife by its roads and waterholes than by wandering the spaces of Damaraland. By all means experience the freedom of Namibia's vast open spaces, but to experience its black rhinos, do not eschew the 8,600 square mile "confines" of Etosha.

I've read and enjoyed some of Rick Bass's previous books, and I was really looking forward to this Vine selection. I have to say, I am a bit disappointed.Bass is as much a philosopher and poet as he is a nature writer, and there are passages in this book that are beautifully written. No surprise there. But the narrative kind of drifts around and never really builds any momentum.Bass goes to Namibia--an awesome, but unforgiving, environment--to seek out black rhinos and the people dedicated to trying to preserve them. Except for the fact that their horns aren't really horns, I knew nothing about rhinos when I opened this book, and I don't know much more now. OK: they're near-sighted, and they easily consume plants that are poisonous to humans. Every fifty pages you come upon those kinds of facts. And just as chimps have Jane Goodall, rhinos have their champions who understand the importance of developing the species profile into that of a "glamour animal," so that people (with money) realize the value of these magnificent animals before they vanish completely.I applaud Mr. Bass for helping that cause.Although Bass does embed some of his personal politics into this narrative. Like, you know all those greedy colonialists who invaded Africa and enslaved/killed millions of people to loot natural resources, then plunged the continent into decades of violent civil war, illiteracy and grinding poverty, and then set the stage for entire villages to be wiped out by AIDS? Bush's fault.Aside from that, Bass is duly impressed by the world that brought forth the rhino. If you LOVE either Rick Bass or rhinos, this is the book for you. But it won't draw you into "rhinoworld" the way John Vaillant's "The Tiger" brought those big cats to life. I don't know if there's a title like that out there, but there should be, because rhinos are truly amazing. This book did make me want to go to Namibia....for about a second. Then I remembered that I am not at all good with travel out in "the bush," as I prefer mid-range hotels near bowling alleys. And THEN I remembered that I live in Chicago, which has black rhinos at both the Lincoln Park AND Brookfield Zoos....so problem solved!!

From the Back Cover

The moon―its face, color, and power―threads through the tapestry of American landscape painting. The moon holds timeless allure for artists and is beloved by viewers of paintings everywhere. The Hudson River Museum has organized The Color of Moon: Lunar Painting in American Art―the first major museum examination of the moon in American visual arts from the 19th through the 20th century. The exhibition, accompanied by a catalog, appears at the Hudson River Museum and the James A. Michener Art Museum in 2019, and its timely presentation celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Mission when, in 1969, American astronauts stepped onto the surface of the moon The Color of the Moon reveals the longing romanticism for this celestial body in the shimmery silver moonscapes of 19th-century artists―Thomas Cole, Father of the Hudson River School, Jasper Cropsey, Frederic Church, Albert Bierstadt, Susie M. Barstow, George Inness, Edward Bannister, Ralph Blakelock, Winslow Homer, and Childe Hassam. Scientific inquiry stimulated the thirst for moonlight for the exhibition’s 20th-century artists, among them―George Ault, Arthur Dove, Charles Burchfield, Edward Steichen, Oscar Bleumner, Agnes Pelton, Marguerite Zorach, Norman Rockwell, Joseph Cornell, and Jamie Wyeth, who explore abstractions of a full moon as the perfect orb, while tapping into its spiritual possibilities. Other artists show our race toward space, as we cling to our age-old attraction to the chill, distant moon always in our sky.The Hudson River Museum, Fordham University Press, and the Michener Art Museum are joint publishers of the lavishly-illustrated, 200-page catalog, The Color of the Moon: Lunar Painting in American Art. In engaging essays author Stella Paul maps the colors of the moon; catalog co-editors Bartholomew Bland and Laura Vookles explore Hudson River School and Modernist moonscapes and their cultural resonance; and curators Melissa Martens Yaverbaum and Ted Barrow sight the moon’s passage and allure in art of the Gilded and Space Ages. The exhibition and catalog have been made possible by a generous grant by the Mr. and Mrs. Raymond J.
