I usually read most books that involve medical school and then experiences after graduation. I am a retired family nurse practitioner and I really miss the experiences I had with all my patients, I thoroughly enjoyed my career and enjoy books that accurately depict the facts. This can be a tough profession at times, so much so that many people ask why would an intelligent person seek to devote their lives to what can be punishment a lot of the time. It has to be a calling to truly be a good doctor, and apparently Dave Walker felt called to devote his live to patients in need. I thoroughly enjoyed the authenticity as well as the emotional impact the book had on me. If health allowed, I would still be working.

This memoir is sometimes heartbreaking and sometimes his faith is so strong . But just like most people it does falter. You'll have to read it to find out why & when. Such a strong faith he has in God and what this man and his family went through (the good & the bad) That's why I read the entire book One of the most inspirational parts (for me) was when he was living & working in other countries (there were several). I won't give it away though!

I was blessed by Dr. Walker and his amazing faith in God,especially his witness and prayers with his patients in the ICU. He truly was a praying doctor who had faith in a loving God and introduced Him freely to others. I was inspired by his book and lifestyle.

If you were facing surgery or had a loved one hanging in the balance it goes without saying you would want such a Dr. to attend to your care. His documentation of ways He has witnessed God's intervention is inspiring and refreshing.

Being a retired medical professional myself, I thoroughly enjoyed this short book. It was great to read of the many miracles happening in the world because not much is happening here in the Western culture due to faithless pastors and their dead sermons. A better term is "heirlings" are in our pulpits. God works through faith and His Word but Scripture is not being preached today....just silly stories and rock music with dark church sanctuaries. Sad! But back to the book.Dr. Walker is a good story teller. Sorry to read that now he is taking on fiction. The truth is always better than fiction. I used to read it a lot but I repented, deleted all my books (250) and stopped buying. My Bible is way too thrilling to replace with fictional narratives. I wish him success, however, he suffered much over his 40-year medical career. If I went to Jesus, I would want my Dave to find love again.... so bravo doc...be blessed with your Margie. Oh and write a sequel to this one. I am sure you have a lot more to tell about answered prayer and our magnificent God....right? I look forward to seeing Part 2 soon. Leave the fiction to those who don't have what you have.... true life experiences with the One, True and Living God! Thank you for this book. It left me with much to pray about: our unsaved family who need healing and salvation.

An intriguing story about the spiritual journey of a doctor and his mission to ask for God's help in healing the critically ill people he cared for. Starting with an uncertain, tremulous faith, it was thrilling to watch this young doctor's spiritual growth and intimacy with God develop. He was on a mission not just to heal bodies but to bring God into the lives of the patients he cared for. It was fascinating to see how God works miracles of healing even today and how he used the growing faith of this doctor, to accomplish his will and work.The book never dragged....just was wonderful from page one through the epilogue. I highly recommend it especially for those in the medical field.

This book was not quite what I expected in that is was more like vignettes with life lessons than a traditional biography , but it was good, and I did read though it in its entirety just not all at one sitting (which I often do) . Sometimes I took a break in between chapters to think through what he had written.

The story of this godly, gifted doctor will leave you blessed beyond words. If there had been room for one more star, I would have chosen it. It's a truly wonderful account of Dave Walker's work in areas of the world many would not choose to minister in. You will love this book and the man who wrote it.

This book is a masterpiece of historical literature that will bring tears to your eyes with stories that you probably had no idea existed. Why had they not been told? Perhaps for many reasons, but one common thread is that it seems these remarkable emigrants who fled Shanghai 70 years needed a voice, and they could not have found a better writer to tell it than Helen Zia. As one of the four main characters of the book, Annuo Liu, exclaimed to Helen: “I’ve been waiting for someone to tell our story.”The most poignant and compelling story of the book is that of Bing – the author’s own mother, who sailed on the last ship to leave Shanghai in 1949, the General Gordon. Helen’s recount of Bing’s life, from misery and poverty in war-torn China, to her narrow escape from Shanghai and her turbulent start in America, is a heart-wrenching but majestically loving tribute to her mother. Sadly, we learn from the acknowledgements – at the end of the book – that Bing suddenly died before Helen’s book was completed. Fortunately for Helen, her family and the rest of us, Bing’s story had already been recorded for posterity. We also recently learned from an op-ed in the New York Times that it was only through Helen’s dogged persistence that Bing’s story even emerged. What an amazing story, all true and so well written. If you feel sorry for yourself, read this book, and you'll think twice. It shows how people can survive and thrive, even during the very worst of times. This book makes you CARE about each person's journey. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

Thank you for writing this story. The four main characters' struggles and ultimate successes mirror my own. While we did not leave on the Last Boat we did experience many similar hardships and struggles. My parents first came to the U.S. in 1939, leaving my older brother and me with our grandparents when father went to Michigan to study for his masters degree. It was meant to be a short stay but the Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941 changed all that. I would not see my parents until after WWII. Meanwhile my younger brother and sister were born in New York. Father did not stay that long and return to New York just before the Communists took over Shanghai in 1949. Father was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and did not expect he had to work to support a family. By the time we rejoined him in 1953. he was struggling. Mother the ever more practical person rolled up her sleeves and went to work. That was quite a challenge for a society woman whose father and father in law were two of the directors and founders of the Bank of China. We struggled. But somehow even at 12 and 14, my brother and I had a burning desire to study and work hard so that one day we could restore our family's fortune and fame. We both worked and went to school at night and received our Ph.D. computer science in his case and nuclear physics in my case. He certainly succeeded. I did my best. We worked hard so that our kids would not have to go through what we had to. They all went to private schools and later Ivy League and other leading colleges and graduate schools. While we gave them all these worldly benefits I often wonder if we also robbed them of their drive. This is why Helen's book, which I will share with my family is a reminder to them of what we had to go through and what they must not forget.

Just a fabulous book. Knowing many friends who are first generation Chinese born in America, and whose parents came through Hong and Taiwan, it was amazing to see how immigrants can go from the top to the bottom in an instant. They left for their freedom, and in some cases probably for their lives, and the paths they took were not easy, not pretty, and certainly not always what they expected. But they persevered. You can not help but think of the current situation - whether the country is China, Mexico, Syria or anywhere - no one wants to leave what they call home, the decision to do so is terribly unsettling and fraught with danger. The ever-present distrust and discrimination and hatred directed against people who are different - by race, by religion, by color - is sadly a chorus that continues to repeat itself. 105 Chinese allowed per year in the United States? Ultimately every story is personal, and that is perhaps what the author wants to portray most - that each story is its own, unique, heartbreaking at times, but hopefully fulfilling.A great book.

This human face of Chinese and American history is presented in such interesting and compelling real life stories that it was hard to put the book down; I found myself thinking about the characters during the day and wanted to get back to reading what happened next. An excellent book, well-written and insightful into history -- Chinese and American.

The main children in the book are so clearly depicted as who they are and who they might become. Even their family members are individualized and loved or really disliked by me. The history of this time in China was understood by me somewhat, as my father, as a Marine, was stationed in Tsingtao after WW2 ended. He did not talk about his time fighting in he war, but shared a lot about what China was like while he was there, including the starving orphans on the streets. This is one of the best books I have ever read.

A real work of art. A meditation of working at sea in winter. Not a classic sea book w text and informative captions, just photos of the violent sea and fishermen working, and journal entries. I really liked it, but not for everyone. I sat in a chair on a cold,rainy day w a cup of tea and really enjoyed it. Very much an art book.

It should have been noted in the description of this book that all hand written entries are in French. I purchased this as a gift for an elderly commercial fisherman who spent over 55 years at sea. How many old fishermen do you know that can speak let alone read French? The pictures are excellent and most of the narrative is fine. However, it just wasn't what I expected.

Fantastic book. One of the best seabooks I have seen.

Doing things purely for oneself is great, and we can see Jean's total enthusiam into the process. Travelling with ordinary fishmen, everything is like adventures on those traditional trawlers. The process can be dangerous and fruitful. Excellent capture of environment in low light condition using high speed film, where you can see the magic of night and sea. It also includes excerpt from Jean's diary, hand-drawing, and page-clippings. Very rich media combining with visual images. We can taste some subtle changes of photographer's body and mind, which is behind the scene.A raw and original presentation of images presents a powerful record of struggle between human and nature.Forget Titanic. Jean Gaumy's are some moving images, from heart.
