Lynne Chapman's Sketching People is nice addition to the growing number of urban sketching books.This 128-page paperback features a wealth of drawing tips, techniques and wonderful sketches.By the way, this book is published three publishers, Page One, Search Press and Barron's Educational Series. Cover art is different but content is the same.There are tips on styles and approaches with a mix from both observational drawing and also understanding of the human figure structure. There are lots of ideas on what you can draw, where you can draw and how to draw.If you're only sketching people, it can appear monotonous. Well, there are many tips on how you can keep your drawings fresh, such as using different drawing medium, playing with composition or just by looking at the many illustrated examples by artists all over the world. Lynne Chapman's personal sketches are delightful too.There's also a section on how to draw outside in the public, where to look for interesting people to draw and how to react when people come up to look at what you're drawing. Lynne has also included interesting stories from her own experiences when sketching outdoors.If you've ever found sketching people to be difficult and not sure where to start, this is a great book to get. I rarely review books, but this one in my possession less than 24 hours is a winner. Many artists and their styles are featured so that you are not trying to learn this artist's style in step by step pages, but you are invited to view a number of different styles. I consider myself an intermediate water colorist and journalist but I felt like I was being introduced to a new and fascinating subject. The artist's brief explanations about the 'gutter' of a book and how to use it, why writing on your sketchers adds both to the structure and to the interest (to the artist as well, as she says), and some supplies that are different and fun. This book is in the top 5 of my extensive library of art books.

This is not for me. I am just exploring urban sketching and was particularly interested in people and needed a how to book. Based on the glowing reviews, I purchased and was disappointed. This is definitely not a how to book. Its a nice picture book. Maybe after finding that how to book and begin sketching this might become an inspiration at a later date?

This is by far the best book I've ever seen regarding urban sketching people. There is a good balance between instruction and lots and lots of examples - several depict start to finish (such as urban sketching with water color) rather than just the finished product.It covers every base, and includes very specific topics - for example, not only sketching faces, but individual features such as eyes, noses, ears, etc It also covers use of different mediums - ink, pastel, watercolor, oil pastels, markers - and gives examples of each.The book covers an excellent variety of settings - from riding on a train to a music concert to people hanging out at the mall to women in a beauty shop. It addresses subjects of all ages and gives excellent tips as to how to capture each age accurately.For me, this was a 5-star purchase - I can see myself referring to it so much that I'll probably wear it out. :-)

I love urban sketching. I'm just a beginner and feel overwhelmed at the prospect of adding people to those sketches. But no urban seeing is complete without people. This book provides excellent instruction in sketching people as they live and work.

I'm just getting into urban sketching. Buildings and cityscapes are not to hard to sketch, but I needed to get people into the sketches to look more dynamic and complete so I ordered this book. I was not disappointed. It arrived on time. It is 128 pages. Each page has plenty of technique desc description along with several illustrations of the technique. The illustrations are of good size to view (paperback) and in many are colored. I would recommend it to anyone starting or into urban sketching or who just like sketching people. Besides urban sketchers I think watercolorists would benefit from the book. I'm well pleased with the purchase

Very well done book. Love all the tips of how to confidently and surreptitiously sketch people in public. What happens if the person spots you? How to avoid confrontationâ€¦..How do you overcome the reluctance to pull out your pencil when someone might object and you might feel like an intruder? It's a bit like being a street photographer only you can't just snap a shot and walk away. You are stuck in one place and can't hide. So how to handle this? Really helpful.

This book by Lynne Chapman is extremely informative showing various approaches to sketching. The book is filled with beautiful colors and sketches showing the reader everything he or she needs to learn or know about sketching people. She incorporates details of how to sketch the human face, body, movement, clothing, environment, etc. It's fantastic, and a must needed book for anyone interested in sketching people.

I ordered this book for my 6th graders. It's the perfect book to introduce them to the tragedy of the Holocaust. Jack's story is powerful and depicts the struggles faced by many in death camps. The students were able to identify with Jack because of his age and his naivetÃ© in the beginning of the book. Warren does not shy away from the horrors of Holocaust, but the descriptions do not linger too much on the gore, making it age-appropriate.My students were consistently reading ahead and asking to continue reading past our designated ELA period. This novel has not only introduced them to the dangers of hatred and the historical events of the Holocaust, but it also highlights human resiliency. The last couple of chapters do a great job of wrapping up his story and addressing the different ways survivors have dealt with their trauma.The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum website has a collection of excellent supplementary resources you can use alongside this book.

I purchased this audio CD of Surviving Hitler to accompany the book. I work with students who often struggle with reading, but enjoy using audio books. This CD follows along with the text perfectly and is easy to navigate. So, readers can listen to the audio and follow along in the book to help with comprehension. It is good to listen to as a whole class or individually with headphones.Surviving Hitler is a great read for students that are being introduced to the Holocaust as it is a straight forward story that is told quite simply. It is well suited for upper elementary school through high school depending on reading levels and maturity. The reader is not spared from the horrors of the Holocaust which helps readers to be able to emphasize with the memoir of Jack. It would fit perfectly with a unit on the Holocaust or Holocaust based literature.

This story of a child whose family was destroyed by Hitler is riveting and sensitive with great detail of the experience. One of the best memoirs of life in the concentration camp

Surviving Hitler is the heart-wrenching personal account of Jack Mandelbaum and his desperate will to survive Nazi death camps despite the overwhelming odds against him. A once young and care free boy proud of his country and heritage suddenly thrown into a world where everything he knew had been drastically turned upside down. With his family now separated from his father, he had to grow up overnight and be the man he promised his father in order to support and take care for his family, but after being torn away from his mother and young brother by Nazi soldiers Jack suddenly felt hopeless. Knowing that if he was ever going to see his mother, father or brother again Jack vowed to play the Nazi game and do whatever it takes to survive unknowing the horrors that he would soon face. Being eaten alive by lice, overworked, filthy, beaten and starved became Jack's new reality. Daily staring death in the face, Jack felt anguish no human being should ever have to go through. Pictures throughout the chapters give a morbid visual of the oppression these people faced. The author expresses the importance of knowledge and insight into history so that we can recognize and ensure similar events don't repeat themselves.

This book was so good, that I had a hard time putting it down. To know of what those poor people had to endure, it makes my heart break. It really makes me feel so blessed when I think of all of the things that I have and all of the opportunities that I have. Something that those who lost their lives in this horrible war, will never get. Let us never forget them and let us think of them when we are feeling sorry for ourselves.

I like the tone of the writing. It is if he is a best friend giving you advice. This is a serious book at 206 pages and very well pricedin fact I think that it is under-priced but it makes for a great value. There is very good info in here should you choose to use the infoit will definitely make your life better. If Jack Canfield gave our soul chicken soup, Marc Reklau served it up a nice shot of expresso! I love this book! It reads as if you're talking to an excitable best friend; it's a fun read. It starts out like some motivational books do, full of gusto and vigor, but it keeps going while delivering a powerful message: sometimes less really IS more. Too often I've taken on a project only to set myself up for failure by having an insane timeline in my head. Marc Reklau has this book set up so it's all paced out really showing not just the necessity, but the true power of forming a habit. Anything you want to change, to have, be or do, this book is a must-have tool in your toolbox for when you achieve your next goal! I highly recommend it and may very soon make it required reading for my own clients, as well.

This book was recommended to me by a friend, which made it important enough to check out regardless of my reservations towards self-help books. Whether it was because the world is so filled with negativity these days or because my life is at a point when I am re-thinking some of my choices, I don't know, but it has made more impact on me than expected.Â Good impact. So, once again, life proves that we never know untill we try.The book is easy to read, offers well-chosen introductory quotes by people worth listening to, and offers truly positive advice. As it progressed, it grew on me and I found myself really answering its questions in my mind, trying out some advice and finding out they do work. It is pro-active all the time, and you might enjoy the special touch - the questions with answer lines left vividly for you to fill, and excellent questions they are. True, it is repetitive at times but those among us, who are reluctant to dare and change, need repetition. The numbers in the title may seem like hokum, but there IS a valid point to them.I truly admire the author's highly positive tone, not promising instant miracles but gradual, explaining that the change is up to us, offering no excuses and demanding no ridiculous procedures, but truly small steps and persistence. My favourite part is the one about uncluttering and tolerations - it really makes sense to me in my life, and it really does work.I recommend this book to everyone who needs change, a different angle on problem solving, and, above all, less stress in their lives. We really could all use a bit more positivity nowadays.

This book states that it comes with a CD to allow you to freely design and print templates. This is the only reason I added this book to my purchase, since I have several Thiagi books. No CD was included and I bought the new version for $70.+ I have wasted much time searching for free templates - not much luck and not happy.

As a university lecturer, I have often thought how much of teaching is actually game design. A lot of what I do is design activities to provide certain kinds of experience for my students. And while fun is not the primary goal of these activities, every teacher knows the importance of making exercises engaging and entertaining.With this in mind, I went looking for books which addressed the design of such activities. If teachers have been doing it for generations, surely someone has stopped and asked how to do it well? There seem to be endless books cataloguing class exercises others have designed for one purpose or another, but I have found very little work that analyses why these exercises work and how new exercises might be designed.In my search, this book caught my eye. Both the title and the publisher's blurb ("The most highly acclaimed authority on games for performance improvement shares his game-building secrets.") promise to teach you how to design your own games, and maybe let you in on some of the ideas behind their function.Sadly, it is not so. What you get is 30 or so briefly-described `template' games. which you can fill out with your own material. There is no discussion of learning theory or design principles. There is just "add your topic material here". Thiagi's secrets are still his own.

Long one of my favourite training game designers, Thiagi has given up all his very best secrets about interactive training in his book "Design Your Own Games and Activities."Here you will find dozens of brief activity descriptions, 32 chapters, and 30 fully described training activities neatly compiled in one book. Need a better justification for this treasure chest? Fine--Thiagi describes 10 workplace trends that demand interactive strategies, including teamwork, learning organizations, and the changing characteristics of learners. The appendices include a glossary of 62 interactive strategies, indices of the activities in the book, and dozens of resources on everything from the design of interactive strategies to theory to workplace applications to websites on interactive strategies. Plus, a CD with the instructions and handouts for each of those 30 fully described games, ready for you to print off and use.Each chapter covers a specific type of interactive strategy, and starts with an example. Thiagi then outlines the benefits, uses, and limitations of the strategy. Finally, one of those fleshed out examples is provided. Although the game can be played in a training session as is, you have enough information to adjust it to your own audience's needs. Plus the debriefing questions provided for each activity are extremely helpful.I've used most of these activities, and found that this gem of a book has paid for itself many times over. TOP TIPS is an excellent game for sharing best practices. THIRTY-FIVE makes a great session review. TRIPLE-JOLT's Team Poker I is one of my favourite team-building exercises. QUICK DRAW illustrates cooperative creativity very well. This one volume alone can create the core for scores of training sessions--at a fraction of the price of many training activity sets available through other sources.This one comes highly recommended.

Liza Hanks has been my wills and trust attorney for more than 20 years. She writes the same we she speaks -- clearly, in language everyone can understand and with good humor. She explains estate planning options with their pros and cons clearly for the young, old, wealthy and not-so-wealthy because she makes it clear one size does not fit all people or families over their life-time. Recently, we moved from our home of 25 years to a retirement community so my trust needed to be adjusted, but before sitting down with Liza, I purchased this book. After looking over the topics I hoped to discuss with her, I realized there were issues I needed to discuss that I might not have considered without reading her book. It made our discussion more fruitful and my plan much better informed. If you are beginning an estate plan or updating an existing plan this is a great resource.

I don't have much trust for "professionals" and would rather do things myself on my own schedule. Doing your own trust is not tough at all. It takes time, but so does working with a $500 per hour lawyer! The hardest part was dealing with the County Clerk to change the title of my house. They made it clear that they want you to use a lawyer and wouldn't even tell me which form I needed to fill out! It took me 3 trips to complete.

This is an excellent, informative book and I love the fact that it gives you access to online forms. It explains a lot of different options for setting up an estate plan.

The Nolo â€œEvery Californianâ€™s Guide to Estate Planning, Wills, Trusts and Everything Elseâ€ is a really excellent reference book/resource for those who either have, or are contemplating getting, a revocable trust within the state of California (which is the route I went). The book covers basic wills, trusts and estate planning but I viewed it thru the lens of having had a revocable trust for years, and the first thing that struck me while reading this book, which became very apparent in the first 2 or 3 chapters, was that all of the material covered was pretty much exactly the same discussion I had with my lawyer when we had our conference to discuss my trust. Topics included when is it appropriate to do a will vs. trust; considerations about spouse/children/who you will be leaving assets to; creating a list of assets and determining what assets should and should not be placed in the trust (and when you should just go the route of beneficiaries, like with insurance and retirement plans); and how the trust process plays out while you are alive and after you die. The book also goes on to explore other specific topics such as health directives and beneficiaries, and making sure you update your planning as circumstances change, given that people are living longer, have multiple marriages/mixed families, etc). Based on my experience, I found this book pretty much hit the key ideas and concepts that most people will need to know when setting up a revocable trust, and did so in easy-to-understand language.I have read several of Noloâ€™s legal books series (topics including being an executor, trustee, general estate planning and common legal issues that many might face) and their books are affordable and excellent. As always, you should consult a lawyer for your specific situation and to be aware of changes to the law (and in the case of revocable trusts, to make sure real estate deeds are transferred to the trust correctly and that the Trust is correctly recorded by the state) but as a starting point, these are excellent books, and to have a CA-focused volume is welcome (as we do have around 40 million people here).

He was incredibly pleased and happy with this chart and told me it was going to be immensely helpful to him in his studies - especially since his professor understood the material better than he was able to teach it. (A shame, that. But my son utilized study groups and materials to supplement the teacher's lack, of which this chart was one helpful component.)

Man I love this quick study guide. It basically contains my entire financial accounting book in only six pages! From the photo, I thought it was just one page but no it is folded into three pages full of writing front and back for a total of six pages. When I say it covers everything in my book, I mean literally everything I need to know and the beautiful part is it is in exactly the same order as the chapters in my book. For any freshman college student or someone that just wants to learn accounting, this is all you will need forget purchasing those overly priced books. The only thing I have noticed is that it does not include the formulas for things like current ratio, acid or quick test ratio, day's sales average, etc. Other than that this guide is amazing. It basically goes like this: the page in the thumbnail provided by amazon has information pertaining to a summary of chapter 1 and 2 of my book talking about the history of accounting, its origin, what is a debit/credit etc. The next page covers chapters 3-4 like in my book about the accounting equation, assets, etc. And it just continues in that order until you reach stocks bonds owners equity which are the last chapters of my book. You will definitely possess the same knowledge by reviewing this in comparison to someone sitting in class all day being lectured by a professor. Great product. I also purchased one for cost accounting as I could not understand what the book was talking about. These things are great!!

This is especially helpful for us non-account types. This Quick Study guide, in conjunction with the Accounting 2 Quick Study guide, the Accounting Equations & Answers Quick Study guide, and WIlliam G. Droms' book, "Finance and Accouinting for Nonfinancial Managers" go a long way to filling in the blanks for those of us whose focus is necessarily elsewhere.

I own every edition of this excellent book. One significant change in this edition that readers should be aware of is the complete abandonment of OpenGL on Apple's platform. From the preface of the book: "Gone is official support for the Apple Mac platform. Almost all of the new content in this edition requires features introduced with OpenGL 4.4 or 4.5, or recent OpenGL extensions -- none of which were supported by OS X at the time of writing. There is no expectation that Apple will further invest in its OpenGL implementation, so we encourage our readers to move away from the platform."To be fair, the current state of OpenGL on the Mac is poor. Mavericks supports OpenGL 4.1, which is now 5 years old (2010). Apple has announced that the future of graphics development on Apple devices will be "Metal", which is an Apple-proprietary low level hardware interface. This is an unfortunate development for those wanting to target multiple platforms, which is a primary motivation for using OpenGL.If you want to develop for the Mac, you should pick up a previous edition of this excellent book, probably 6th or even 5th edition.7th ed: OpenGL 4.56th ed: OpenGL 4.35th ed: OpenGL 3.34th ed: OpenGL 2.13rd ed: OpenGL 2.0 and 1.52nd ed: OpenGL 1.2, 1.1

First, let me say that the reorganization of text and code embodied in the Sixth Edition of the OpenGL Superbible was a good move. Oh, I have a few gripes and grumbles relating to the reorganization (e.g., it seems like Chapter 5 will never end. It could be split, deferring pieces to later and appropriate contexts.) The reorganization of the sample code is a good step forward. There is less dependence on mysterious libraries. And, the essential support code has been reorganized into a more attractive â€œframework.â€Be prepared for a lot of emphasis on shader programming. Face up to it: Itâ€™s the nature of the modern beast. If youâ€™re not ready for that, one suggestion is to start with an earlier edition â€“ one that focuses on earlier versions of OpenGL, and then grow to love it.Having gone through many (aborigines are said to have a ternary number system: 1, 2, many) editions of the Superbible, I find it necessary to keep a copy of a corresponding Redbook (OpenGL Programming Guide) edition handy. In that sense, I find the Superbible to be an essential learning aid. But â€¦It was indeed unfortunate to find that the current authors and publisher continued to follow the habits of previous authors and publishers of walking away from what I view as their responsibility to their readership:1. Others have complained about the quality of the black and white illustrations. They were correct: the printing of screenshots is terrible. The majority of the current authors are experienced authors. (a) They should have avoided the problem. (b) The editor should have caught the problem before going to press. (c) The printer should have called attention to the problem before committing to a run.2. There is no consistent way of tying a screenshot or a code listing to a project name in the source code provided as a download on the bookâ€™s web site. I made it a point to deduce, by one means or another, the project name from the text or code if the project name was not explicitly mentioned (which was the usual case). The authors could have provided an index in the downloadâ€™s README file.3. In the Preface, an author states, â€œWe made a bunch of mistakes â€“ weâ€™re certain of it. â€¦ If you think you see something that doesnâ€™t quite gel, check the bookâ€™s Web site for errata.â€ Iâ€™m writing this review in June 2014, almost a year after publication of the book. There are no errata on the web site. Moreover, there is no mechanism for submitting errata.4. The code I downloaded (dated November 2013) built on Visual Studio 2010 successfully. All but a few projects executed without error. I found the distribution for VS 2010 available on GitHub to be useless: Apparently the last person to build it built it with VS 2013. I considered submitting an issue, but got discouraged when I saw that the last commits were made seven or eight months ago.5. The bookâ€™s Appendix C describes two tools, ktxtool and dds2ktx, which it says is available in the source code. Not so.6. I searched for but could not find an OpenGL Superbible forum. The best I could find was the general OpenGL forum. The last blog entry on the bookâ€™s web site is dated February 2014. Apparently the authors have better things to do.In scoring a rating for this edition of the OpenGL Superbible, I started with five stars. After all, I consider it and the Redbook to be essential components to learning OpenGL. Then, because of the lousy illustrations and the authorsâ€™ neglect, I backed off two stars. A one-star deduction would not have been enough.It occurs to me that all of the problems enumerated above could be resolved on the bookâ€™s web site. I would be glad to improve my rating if the authors (or even someone else) would step up to addressing them.

The main issue I have with this book is the dependency to the sb6 library which is the author's wrapper library around OpenGL.If the book were titled the SB6 Library superbible, It would have been ok but after reading the claims at the beginning of the book stating that this book is meant to go over the OpenGL library without jumping back and fourth I couldn't help but wonder why the authors chose to include their own library which defeats that purpose to some extent.Granted the library simplifies things but that's not the purpose of a book. Since the target audience is already familiar with C++, there's no need to wrap the main() function for example, which I find unnecessary. This may be fine for the author but we all have different styles of coding and it's not the author's place to force a framework in order to explain how the OpenGL pipeline works.This is a book about OpenGL and the code should run out of the box with dependencies to OpenGL, GLUT and GLFW being acceptable. If the authors chose to develop a wrapper library, the library should be part of the text as an illustration to how things are put together. Also what would be more acceptable is if the sb6 library's cpp source code was available to view instead of distributing a black box which may confuse the reader.Also when adding shader code, the authors fail to mention the appropriate code updates to the rendering functions which can be a bit inconvenient. Also failure to delete compiled shaders in one of the examples shoud be avoided.The OpenGL pipeline is getting more and more complex and I can see the appeal in simplifying it by making it more accessible but writing a book about a library and forcing a black box framework is unacceptable. This book does explain things well I must admit but for experienced C++ and OpenGL users, I recommend the Red Book for a more thorough read and detailed reference.
