Excellent survey of some of the standard tricks and techniques for turning the unorthodox. There's enough information here to do most of this yourself; I'll be able to use a lot of these techniques pretty quickly and I am a beginner. If you get very far in turning, I suspect you'll need more than a couple of these...If you're quick you'll look at the pictures and read a little of the text and have the epiphany... no more reading required! In some cases you might require a few more details, and will find a very careful reading to be crucial as some of the explanations could have been better edited. For example, Page 52 Waste Blocks and Glue Blocks: "A glue block serves a similar function but is typically much larger and meant to be reused..." with no further explanation of how one might achieve this reuseability... perhaps he means "I *intend* to reuse this thing I just glued to my bowl, but must cut it off the work and alter it"... which some might not regard as reuseable... and so what is reuseable?I really liked the projects and think they'll be very useful, although the pictures and text don't seem to synch... until you realize that the picture was taken either before or after one of the intermediate steps in the text. aha. I see now. after the third read.In my book, these are mostly minor gripes that belong more to the editor than the author, and which can be overcome by careful reading. Obviously this is not always the case.I also found two chapters on vacuum chucks overkill, but you may not.Overall, I think this is a very good book that fills an important niche. I am not aware of a better, more complete book on the subject. I consider it a very worthwhile purchase.

This should the second book in any turner's collection. Dr. Green does a fantastic job describing the various ways to make stuff on the lathe. The illustrations are top-notch and the directions are astute. This books provides lots of how-to. How to make a goblet with a long thin cylinder connecting the base to the vessel, how-to make your own vacuum chucks, how to place a bowl on a vacuum chuck so it is aligned. The book justly deserves my 5 star review. (BTW- the first book should either be a Richard Raffan or David Ellsworth intro to turning book.)

This is a little bit of an odd book.As the title suggests, it goes into great detail on how to attach the work to the lathe, how to make steady rests etc. At first I was a little nonplussed when reading because the author goes into detail on everything except the actual turning, even the turning that you might have to do to make a jig. However, this focus is actually the best part of the book. The reader probably already knows the basics of turning and would, in any event, be better off with a more general book on the actual woodturning techniques for this part.The author has spelled out a number of creative and useful ways to inexpensively increase the capabilities of the wood lathe and to get around some of the problems turners will probably encounter. Further, he often spells out several different ways or jigs to do similar things so the reader has options. I particularly like the examples of the bowl and spindle steadies. I followed his plans for a bowl steady and saved more than the price of the book by making one. (It works great by the way.) The biggest problem I had was deciding which of three plans would work the best for what I wanted to do.This would not be a good first choice if you can only buy one book on turning. But while there are multiple good books on other aspects of turning, this book has fairly minimal overlap with others. I therefore recommend it as part of every woodturner's library.

Really good book. I haven't purchased a lathe yet and wanted to know more about the accessories that either came with a lathe or you'd need to really do the work. Turns out, I learned a lot about chucks and now realize that when you get home with your new lathe, you might be surprised about what's not included in the box. While the book does a good job of explain commercial accessories, it also shows you how to make a number of jigs and fixtures. While many experienced turners might find the contents of the book to be common knowledge, for me, it cleared up a lot of my confusion. It's a keeper.

For $16 I got a bargain. I have been turning for 12 months and have learned a ton from this book. It covers chucking with hardware as well as making and using homemade jigs/chucks. Lots of precise explanation of the pictures. It explains the various chucks and the various uses of each. Gives instructions on remounting; chucking large and small projects; making and using steady rests. For projects it covers assembling stacked hollowed forms; adding rims or feet to hollow forms. Very good value.

This is a good book, easy to understand with many illustrations. Instructions on using different centers and chucks you can purchase. Also instructions and pictures on how you can make these by using your lathe. I would recommend this book for anyone who turns wood on a lathe .

Doc Green provides a lot of valuable information on holding wood on your lathe. Besides what you would expect on chucks, faceplates and centers, he goes on to shopmade chucks, jam chucks, collets and mandrels. There are lots of innovative shopmade jigs and chucks detailed. He explains how to make chucks to reverse turn a bowl for finishing: with cole jaws, doughnut chucks and Longworth chucks. He includes an excellent chapter on making vacuum chucks with very detailed instructions on making the trickiest part, the rotary adapter.

There is stuff in here I think would take me months to think up.A real time saver for anyone who spends a fair amount of time on the lathe, and often gets caught on, "How to finish off that piece, with a chunk of it still in the chuck".Some of it is intuitive, some if it is just downright ingenious.

This book deserves better than the previous reviewers comments about women theologians. Besides being incredibly well researched, Shuster's ability to lay out the religious quest in the modern age gets right to the heart of the matter. We can not escape our angst about who we are because it is what makes us seek our redemption. To believe you've got the answer is you're downfall. By incorporating scripture, literature, philosophical, theological arguments and fathers of the church, a picture of humanity arises that gives us back the dignity of being here in the first place. I haven't enjoyed such lucid christian arguments in a book since C.S.Lewis. I hadn't read any existential theology since my seventies graduate years of Camus and Dostoyevsky. Marguerite Shuster's timely work for me, renewed my faith and love of that old time religious question. Who are we? And sent me to her mentor Paul King Jewett to find out who we are.

There are many redeeming qualities to this book. Some of these include that it has a fairly thorough academic background, making it useful for reviewing several positions in one place. This also means the bibliography is useful for finding sources on particular points of view. Finally, most of the positional critiques are fair in their presentation and not overly polemic or biased. However, to call this work conservative or Calvinist is being generous.In fact the work is quite really against some basic biblical principles. First of these is that The Scripture plainly teaches that women are not to be putting themselves or to be put into positions of authority over men in the church (1 Timothy 2:12 and following). Contrary to this, Marguerite Shuster is teaching at a Seminary, both men and women, about preaching and teaching and theology. That makes this work first and foremost a product of sinful behavior. This does not mean the work is inherently sinful but does certainly mean that it is the fruit of sin and as such is a tremendously ironic work. Along this same line there are several areas where Dr. Shuster takes the feminist position (see pages 56-57 for an example).That this work is against palagianism and for the most part arminianism cannot be disputed. She makes strong attempts to relate a Total Depravity view of the Fall and for the most part does so successfully.Long story short, I originally bought this book to be use as a source for a paper in support for the calvinistic position on the Doctrine of the fall and ended up using as a source representing the feminist view in my paper.

Patterns for Jazz Bass Clef is a great way to learn and practice your scales and chords and to sharpen your reading skills. Laid out in a straightforward way, the exercises start simply with arpeggiation up and down the scale (or chord) in 4/4 time, revolving through the circle of fifths or another pattern. The exercises become more complicated, and time signatures change, as do note values. A lot of material is covered. It can be challenging, but with clear, lucid instructions and helpful examples at the head of each lesson, using this book is actually fun; unlike with lots of other practice books, with this one you feel you are actually learning as you practice. Highly recommended.

Enough material to work through for a lifetime. Too bad I didn't get this book 40 years ago. I imagine that if a young energetic but patient person actually took the time to methodically and diligently work through all the pages in this book with mind, body, and musical instrument, he or she would be a monster improviser. This book doesn't cover melody and phrasing. Only the nuts and bolts, so to speak.

Okay, yes, it is logically laid out. If you know nothing about how to use chords in playing runs, this book is very instructive; the exercises may seem really boring, but since songs are in different keys, you need to go through the exercises to be sure you know what you're playing... and you can learn to read music at the same time - a must if you want to learn Jazz. And reading will get you a lot of other gigs as well.Now the not so great. In some ways there is just too much detail from the gate and it can seem a bit overwhelming. Some of the material could be taught through other examples later in the book. But that really is a matter of differences in approach more than a criticism. I teach so my methods are a little different. But that said...Overall, I recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn how to use your instrument more effectively and gain a solid foundation in chord use when playing not just Jazz, but other music, as this information translates well to virtually all styles of music if applied creatively and judiciously.

I started studying jazz a few months ago. The theories are alright, but I always had the problem with improvisation. I play the bass guitar, and I hope to expand my knowledge of jazz through some improvisation on the bass. I had a saxophone teacher that taught me some basics of improvisation, and he highly recommended this book to me. He says this is one of the must-reads for jazz musicians. I got it a few days ago and started practicing, and so far it's going well! The book includes lots of different digital patterns that are really useful in jazz improvisation. This is a really helpful book.

Oh good more exercises. They should have included key signatures especially as they want you to play the exercises in all the keys. The odder keys I need to look up

Starred Review. Kenny Shopsin hates publicity the way a magnet must hate metal filings. With a documentary, a New Yorker profile and several New York Times articles clinging to him, this supposedly reluctant restaurateur now adds to his own troubles by releasing a totally hilarious and surprisingly touching treatise on cooking, customer loyalty and family bonds. As his brood grew to include five kids, his Manhattan eatery shrunk in size, yet maintained its idiosyncratic 900-item menu (reproduced here in a 12-page spread). Recipes for more than 100 of the offerings are presented, including Mac n Cheese Pancakes and Blisters on My Sisters (sunny-side-up eggs placed atop tortillas and a rice and bean concoction). But the real treat is Shopsin's salty philosophizing. Sure, pancakes are tasty, but he reminds us that, They are flour and milk drowned in butter and some form of sugar. They're crap. And the customer is always wrong until they show me they are worth cultivating as customers. Two such well-cultivated customers were the writer Calvin Trillin and his wife, Alice. They pop up throughout the book, providing not only happy reminiscences, but a roux of poignancy as both Shopsin and Trillin become widowers, bonded together over the love of a decent meal, quickly rendered. ...who...who...defies description.I was considering buying this book after seeing the documentary, I Like Killing Flies. I went back and forth. On the one hand, I thought, I best these recipes are REALLY good. On the other hand, Kenny kinda came off as a major-league jerk in the movie. (Let me tell you, a little Kenny can go a long way.) On the third hand, I thought maybe he's really that awful (although I can see the point of tossing parties of more than four), or maybe it's the editing that did it. I settled on editing, and bought the book.These recipes are fabulous. This is the kind of heavy-duty comfort food I grew up with; my mom is a marvelous cook, so my comfort food expectations are pretty high. And I just LOVE the idea of a Thai Cobb salad.Now I want to make a trip to New York and check this out in person. The book is THAT good.

Shopsin's is a very unique dining establishment in NYC which I make certain to eat at every time I visit NY. He has a very quirky personality, and it's sometimes said that the Seinfeld Soup Nazi episode is modeled after him.This book had a massive impact on my home cooking philosophy. In addition to pointing out how he embraces the characteristics of poorly cooked eggs for certain dishes in his egg chapter, his soup chapter was particularly life changing. I've always followed the "big batch" soup method, where I make my soups in very large batches and tune as needed. This has the effect of making all of the flavors mingle together. Kenny's philosophy is that this is not always ideal, and haven eaten many of his soups, I never realized the contrast but now agree. He keeps an assortment of broths on hand for his soups, but makes each bowl to order. Each time an order for a bowl comes in, he will prepare the additions as needed, usually by sauteing. This gives more distinct separation of the flavors.To put this into practice this week, I used a mushroom/asparagus/onion dish that I created to serve as a side with some steak this week. This gave me three different soups in practice:Soup A: Chunky Mushroom and Asparagus Soup (I just heat the broth and filling, and combine, season to taste. The veggies stay Al dente without turning into mush.)Soup B: Creamy Mushroom and Asparagus Soup (Same as Soup A, I just stir in some Creme Fresh)Soup C: Mushroom and Asparagus Bisque (Same as Soup B, just Vitamixed)I like adding crushed cashews to all three soups at serving.I don't think I'll go back to huge batches of soups that I get bored with. While I always have a fresh batch of broth from the previous couple of weeks scraps, I can now change which soups I make out of the broth each day.

This guy is such a different type of chef than I used to seeing on tv or in magazines. He has a real appreciation for the culinary world and doesn't like the fake wannabe's (which, if I'm being really honest with myself, is me sometimes). He's a class act and I hope to hear more from him on really any subject.A great, great read!

I first met Kenny while watching the DVD documentary on his story.I will say see the movie first, and then you will totally enjoy this book and it will help put it in prespective.The man, his family, his cooking is all so unique. He is the walking truth. What you see, is what you get. You can't help but think about how he reminds you of somebody you know or knew. Little bits of Kenny are in all of us really.Have the movie for Supper and the book for desert!

This is a wonderful book. It's entertaining, helpful, intelligent, attractive and just fun. Mostly it's a reminder of Kenny Shopsin who, with his wife and children, created a grumpy, happy, special world.

Short book...summarizes the key points of Neville Goddard's work. I've read all the other Neville Goddard books and some of his lectures.I found the answers to the questions in this book helpful...and, like many of his books, he often says things in one place differently from some of his other books...and sometimes this 'new way' of stating previous material makes a very positive difference. I found that to be the case in this book.

I enjoyed the book. I never agreed with the teachings of the Bible by certain pastors and reverends but his book really made me think. Ever since I was little they way they taught the Bible never made sense to me. Being scared of God never made sense to me. Taking responsibility away from ourselves and blaming it on everything else made no sense to me. So finding this book out everything in to perspective FOR ME! If you are a closed minded religious nut I wouldn't get the book because I THINK you would be probably be offended. Just giving you a heads up! But if you're open to viewing the Bible in a different way then give it a read.

Neville Goddard is a true mystic with a matter of fact way of teaching. He's the real deal. There are tons of books on manifesting. But, if you can learn to feel your desire, you only need this one.

Only recently: last year came upon this author's work-- and trust it's a divine move!!! I've skim through because currently reading another from this, same collection-- and admittedly so, feel as though (for me,) they are a gift from heaven!! Totally helping me to put things in proper perspective-- especially the language, understanding, clarity, teaching, and delivery style of this, author!!!
