PreS-K—No one likes to think about it, and even fewer plan for it, but explaining death to a toddler can be a difficult task. It is with this in mind, and from personal experience, that Zucker elected to write a book on death for this age set: two- and three-year-olds. She describes in simple terms what happens when someone dies. The author acknowledges that a book on death written just for little ones is a bit niche but emphasizes in the foreword the need to properly discuss this tough situation with young children. Proper names and pronouns within the story are written in red in order to be easily noticed and personalized when read aloud. The text is concise but heartfelt. Fleming's pencil and watercolor illustrations are done primarily in muted blues that set a melancholy tone and work well given the context. The narrative ends on a hopeful note ("Love cannot die") and is followed by tips and information about talking to kids about death. VERDICT An important book to have on hand for those who serve toddlers. It won't circulate every week, but it will come in handy when the need arises.—Lindsay Jensen, Nashville Public Library

My dear friend passed away suddenly and unexpectedly only 24 hours after giving birth to her little girl. She is survived by a two year old son as well. I have been searching for a book appropriate for his age both for having a new baby in the house and bereavement. Unfortunately, its very hard to find books for his age range and all of the illustrations feature a mother prominently. This book is exactly what he needs but we can't use it because of the mother illustrated who actually looks exaxtly like his mother. This book is great because it has customizable text but it also really needs to be available with a male caregiver. Is there anyway I could get one?
I thought it was okay, very simplistic. I did not like the comparing death to a toy needing new batteries, a toy can be fixed with new batteries, death can not be fixed. I like the idea behind being able to change the pronouns but at the same time they will not match the pictures, and that makes it difficult for younger children. I'm not sure if I will keep this one, or donate it.
Simple language that was very appropriate for my 2.5 year old. Talked about feelings and emotions and acceptance of those. I liked that it didn't specifically mention God, and instead focused on how you felt and your actions right now. Very appropriate for the situation that we needed it for. The words in the book are designed for a grandparent death, but you can and should substitute whomever you need to talk about. As my kiddo can't read, she did not know the difference.
I was worried about how to explain their grandfather’s death to my 3 year olds, who haven’t yet been introduced to the concept of God or heaven. This book explains death in a simple and comforting way they could understand.
A very good stepping stone for the conversation. This book references grandma but you can easily swap the name or noun for any use. You could say Nana (like in our case) or could even use a proper name. My son is 4 and doesn’t quite understand the gravity of death but the book made him understand that it is sad and maybe why I am sad.I bought this for the imminent loss we were expecting of their great grandmother whom raised me and is more like my mother.I’m glad there are books for this because I’m no good at it.
Great tool to use to help explain death to young kids. I like the way they explain it and I think it's not an issue that the illustrations include a woman. I explained it to my 2.5 year old that the little boy and his mommy were talking about someone who died in their family, just like we are discussing the death of our family member. I really liked the Note to Parents. It helped me feel confident in how I was discussing this topic with my son. I have already recommended this book to friends.
Hard for my daughter who just lost her father but her 3 yr old daughter asked questions just like book said they would . Helpful when one loses a relative.
I recommend this to any child struggling with death and understanding.
