No doubt about it, this is a very "smart" novel. Indeed, one of the smartest I've ever read. But it's also a rollicking ride! Here's a paradox: because this book is so deeply besotted with words and the structures of language, a novel is the perfect medium. And yet, perhaps because the narrative is delivered in intensely visual images, it would also make a compelling movie. Not sure how he did that! This is a book I'll be savoring more than once.

I loved this book, until I didn’t. The writing is fluid, driving, modern. Characterizations are humorous sketches of contemporary intellectual and corporate cloud dwellers, though few truly come to life. As he admits (in the voice of his protagonist), the author has much to say about our digital vs. IRL existence, and a great deal of this is stuffed into a fairly small plot framework. In all, the novel needed more editing, better proofreading (shame, Viking Press!), and a less hyperbolic ending. A darkly funny read that proved exhilarating until it wasn’t.

A self-reflexive story about a writer whose work spirals into chaotic non-meaning. Ground-breaking for 1965, but a little bit more tedious in 2019.

Deeply thoughtful

A difficult to define novel with some fantastic elements but also some overthinking/overwriting, which is probably the point. Percy goes to the “Institute” in the desert where he becomes a “fellow” and is expected to work on and complete a “project” which, once completed, is then presented both internally to other fellows, and externally broadcast (presumably via the Internet). There is some question throughout regarding the level of voluntariness of participants, especially as the external environment begins to deteriorate and mimic the internal struggle of the narrator. There is a creepy “Director” and “admins”. Most interestingly is the Same Same shop, and the brilliant fix it provides while simultaneously reeking havoc. Is this a novel about the creative process? Is it about the agonizing process of writing a novel? Or is it about being trapped, either literally or figuratively, within reams of worthless lingo? While this novel gives the reader a lot to think about, the overloaded chaos of it makes it difficult to connect to it, or to fully appreciate the creativity involved in writing it. I do believe this is all the point of the work and I appreciate it in that way. I just wish I had cared more. Again, that’s maybe the point.

Same Same by Peter Mendelsund is free NetGalley ebook that I read in early February.Exacting futuristic narration (peppered with online acronyms) from Percy and it comes off quite reminiscent to the concept of High-Rise, since Percy chooses to live in a seamlessly controlled, idealized, and perfected Institute with a vaguely Communist collective of people with specialized jobs. Over time, Percy experiences a gradual sense of unease, doubt, and annoyance toward others as he settles into a routine.

I cannot work out how to react to this splendidly written but almost self reflexive work. It stumbles along with our protagonist percy as he meets people of the institute who labour on a unifying protect of living well. A local shop introduces ideas of 'simalcra' but percy eventually is barred from going .. he is too enthusiastic.. or so we think. ...the ending approach was long .. and it's a surprise.. I'm not sure I relished this as much as I wanted to.
