A number of years ago, Wilderness Press published a series of 50 Best Short Hikes, guides meant for families and really almost everyone. The Utah National Parks selection was one of the best sellers in the series, but author Ron Adkison has passed on, and Wilderness Press has brought in Greg Witt to write a new version of this book. He has done a marvelous job. Yes, the book remains true to the original series and focuses on walks the whole family can enjoy. But these are spectacular hikes, and any hiker of any ability level will find something to captivating in this book, including die hard exercise enthusiasts who would normally shy away from a book with the word "short" in the title.Utah's national parks are managed with day hikers in mind. Backpacking is often an option, of course, but water sources are scarce and unreliable, and often the best scenery is fairly close at hand anyway. Visitors to Arches, for example, can take in much of the park in an extended day, and one of the best features of this book is that Witt offers a "park in a day" preface to each chapter so visitors coming for spring break, probably the best time to visit most of these parks, can get the maximum enjoyment for their time. Utah is not that easily accessible to me, and books like this are ideal for my type of exploration. Often, you can get a better feel for a park by doing two or three short hikes than one long one in any event. And one cannot quarrel with the hike selection: Park Avenue and Devil's Garden in Arches, The Queen's Garden-Navajo Loop in Bryce, Mesa Arch and Grand View Point in Canyonlands, and Hickman Bridge in Capitol Reef. Virtually every one of my favorite trails appears in this book.Each park gets about 10 trails, with Zion (correctly) meriting slightly more. Mileages are accurate, sketch maps adequate, and the side bars on natural history make the text all the more enjoyable. But most importantly, this book gets you out of your car and onto the trails in short order, allowing you to experience the best of each park. And what makes it a great book is that if you use it once, you are sure to want to use it again. I know my week long visit this year has whetted my appetite for more, and I have avidly read, and reread, the route descriptions in this fine little volume. I can hardly wait to use it again next year. That is the mark of a great hiking guide. Get it.

Another 5 star offering! We spend a lot of time in southern Utah, in and out of the National Parks. This book guides us to the best in fairly short hikes as opposed to hikes of 2 or 3 days length. The directions for reaching the trail heads are concise and accurate. The descriptions of what to expect on the hike are appreciated. A good investment with a return of tons of good information.

The book accurately describes the trails and gives a good indication of their difficulty and the trails' special features. It was fun to read about the trails ahead of time and think about what we might want to try. We spent a day at Bryce Canyon and 4 days at Zion and found that the trails in those parks were clearly marked, so the book trail maps were not really needed, and the park free publications gave us much of the same information about difficulty and interest points. The book was not needed as a carry-on in our backpacks, but it was a helpful resource in planning.

I used this guide as a companion on a trip last to Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. It gives some great information on specific hikes, and pointed me toward the most rewarding. With the background information in this guide, I was able to predetermine my hikes ahead of time instead of wasting precious time while on vacation. Nice book, good location information, and fantastic hiking time estimates. I have hiked 13 of the 50, and they were all amazing. Cannot wait to fulfill the balance.

In preparing for our first trip to Utah, this book was great as we planned day hikes in the five national parks. Recommended by Greg's daughter, Tessa, at their guide company, Alpenwild, I purchased the book before the trip to tag hikes that looked interesting. While in the parks, the very detailed descriptions of the hikes allowed us to choose two or even three that would fit into our plans for the day. Where possible, we were choosing hikes with the greatest elevation gain, and the book provided us with the details we needed. From Devil's Garden trail in Arches to Hidden Canyon in Zion, the book helped us make the best of our time in the five parks.

Yes at this time it very much met my needs. I'm preparing to take a months vacation out in Utah 's canyon/arches area. This book gave me a good idea of what to expect and how to take the best advantage of what is available. I am a Senior age camper but the book list some trails I'm sure I can handle. I would very much recommend this book for someone planning to travel the area.

We used this guide to help select which hikes to do in Utah’s National Parks. Good overview, and background info but be sure to also consult the visitors guide you get at the park office since some great hikes are not listed in this book. Also take the trail ratings with a grain of salt. A few rated moderate were actually pretty strenuous. Wish some of the pix were in color instead of B&W.

I just returned from a trip to all 5 of Utah's national parks and this guide was indispensable. Since I had limited time in each park, I wanted to hike the best trails and be aware of what I was getting into. The temperature was often in the 90's and I felt comfortable choosing a trail that was doable in the heat. For instance, I hiked the Mesa Arch trail in 99° heat and knowing that the difficulty rating was a 1 (a short easy walk), elevation change was only 80' and average hiking time was 20-30 minutes and saw a lovely sight I would have otherwise probably skipped without the book. I enjoyed the descriptions as well, telling me what scenic mountain or canyon I was gazing upon.I found it a very good trail companion.

Given who Sandel is and his previous body of work, I bought this book expecting a deeper exploration about the morality of economics and the limits of its underlying utilitarian framework (and its implicit mathematical ordering eg Pareto optimality and the like). Instead, Sandel generally picks interesting - but extreme - cases such as paying drug addicts to undergo sterilization to make two narrow points about markets corrupting that which is traded or making an assumption that willingness to pay can be divorced from ability to pay. In addition, he doesn’t do much to deepen his analysis of these two points - he merely points out a myriad of situations where they are present. Consequently, while his argument is valid and interesting, a lack of breadth and depth made this purchase less satisfying than it could have been.

Having seen Michael Sandel on TV and having found his intellectual clarity and gifts breath taking I simply had to read something he had written. This book is no disappointment. His writing on the subject of economic views on life is brilliant. Clear, easy to follow and profoundly challenging as he discusses the awful reality of the commodification of much of life in the western world . His chapter on gifts and their meaning alone is enough to recommend this book as a great read for anyone who has some issues with the way the world in the west is heading. He argues for a human side to our deliberations. The need for compassion rather than an economic explanation for everything.

Michael Sandel is unsurpassed in writing books that are delightfully accessible while being intellectually rigorous. What Money Can't Buy lacks the academic references to classical thinkers that were in his book Justice: What's the Right Thing to Do, which is a shame, but it is still one of the most thought-provoking books I have read in a long time.Sandel's subject is money, specifically how monetary incentives and disincentives are being used today in a wide array of realms where money was not a factor in the past. Sandel is a philosopher, not an economist or political scientist, and so he asks, "What does this mean? And why should I care?" As he says in the introduction, "to decide what money should--- and should not ---be able to buy, we have to decide what values should govern the various domains of social and civic life. How to think this through is the subject of this book."To explore the implications of the expansion of the role of markets in our lives, What Money Can't Buy considers two primary aspects: fairness and corruption. The first aspect, fairness, is the more obvious: a wealthier individual will not be affected by a societal incentive/disincentive as much as a poor one. Granted, true, but I do not need a Harvard professor to tell me so. The second aspect is the more interesting: does the use of monetary factors corrupt our sense of values? Are there basic human rights and feelings that should be immune from market manipulation? An interesting example is that of a Swiss town that was a potential site for a nuclear waste dump. The town was a very good site for such a facility, and 51% of the town residents said they would accept it. They were then asked if they would accept the dump if authorities offered to pay an annual inducement of over $8000 per person. The rate of acceptance fell from 51% to 25%. Apparently the residents did not like having the issue turned from one of civic altruism into a pecuniary matter. People do believe that there are issues in which money should not play a role.The book's prolific examples range from Bruce Springsteen concert tickets to paying for an upgraded prison cell (!) to cap-and-trade. I especially loved the Springsteen example. People were scalping tickets to a Springsteen concert in New Jersey; you may or may not feel this is unethical. However, if you are also told that Springsteen deliberately kept ticket prices low because he is from NJ and wanted ordinary people to be able to come, AND this cost him an estimated $4 million in ticket revenue, does this affect your opinion?Although I thought Sandel's examples were well-chosen, thought-provoking, and enjoyable, I wish the actual discussion of the philosophical implications of the lessons to be learned had been more extensive. He made ME think, but I'd like to have heard more about what HE thinks. The book was fairly short and over too soon.

Sandel has all the credentials that make for a fine commentary on modern American commercial society. His deep sense of what constitutes justice informs his many examples in the book of how businesses and corporations have stolen the public arena for their advertisements. He clearly describes how this creeping phenomenon has taken over the commons and usurped public spaces for their capitalistic messages. According to dispassionate marketing theories, these intrusions make sense, in the context of maximizing efficiency and promoting the common good. Sandel points out, however, that the cost is a loss of fairness and a warped idea of what community should be.

Sandel's book provides a key insight into the shift and influence of the Neo-Liberal (total faith in the free market) trend in economics. In his intro he provides a powerful statement into this shift. He states that "we" may be moving from a society that has a market-driven economy to a free-market society. The distinction is very important because the shift means that many aspects of our society (procreation, pollution, education, etc.) that are value-laden are now treated as commodities like soap, cars and pork-bellies.Sandel offers no solutions, but provides key arguments on both sides showing what a slippery slope this trend is. His analysis is excellent in showing the issue underlying each argument, and in doing so, the reader can cut through the brambles of rhetoric and view the issue in clearer terms. His writing is clear and, as mentioned above, he provides no answers, but rather forces the reader to come to their own position given all the "facts." This is a must read for people to begin to think about important moral decisions in this society and not be swayed by loud-mouthed media "pundits."

About the Author

Koos Stadler has been a career officer in the South African National Defence Force for more than 30 years. Twenty-four of these he served in the elite South African Special Forces, better known as the “Recces” - spending 10 years in active service during the long drawn-out guerilla war against the then South West Africa Peoples’ Organisation (SWAPO) on the border between Namibia and Angola. Stadler conducted many exceptionally sensitive missions, often facing extreme conditions of hunger, thirst, loneliness and danger. Good Read. Koos Stadler is Honest & Frank about his Feelings & Fear. This is Something some Authors won't admit to. He gives one some insight into the Selection & Training Courses. I have a Friend that served with the 44 Para Brigade Pathfinder Company, so I really liked this book.

Easy to read biography and book about small team operations in less known conflict between Republic of South Africa against Soviet Union and Cuba.

By far the best personal account of a Special Forces operator I have read. Well written, honest and enthralling. A perfect blend of military detail and personal story.

If you know anything at all about soldiering, you will understand how difficult these missions were.I got scared reading in bed.It is one thing to operate in a group, and quite another when it gets down to one or two or three.Try it.Absolute top of the scale special forces work, unmatched anywhere else. These guys had basically zero logistic support when it got down to it, and they were fighting the whole world as well.Superbly told, and humbly told.......which is a characteristic of a man who could actually do this work, and come back alive time and again.No grandiose rah rah rah as is seen way too often in modern military books.

Incredible tales about a not so well known war against comunism un southern Africa.

I enjoyed every bit of this book an so many lessons for life about not giving up an pursuing your dreams, one of the better books I have read

This is a book that comes back to you when you are in bed late at night, reliving those acts of bravery by a young man that was apart from his physical powers, just another young man.

really interesting on how they did their training and missions that they went on. I enjoyed the book!!
