The World of Jewish Entertaining: Menus and Recipes for the Sabbath by Gil Marks is among my favorite cookbooks. I have a collection of close to three hundred cookbooks. He is thoroughly knowledgeable about Jewish cuisine from all over the world. Gil Marks is a Rabbi, Chef, Author, and Humorist. I own the other books he authored: 1) The World of Jewish Cooking, 2) The World of Jewish Desserts, 3) Olive Trees and Honey, 4) The Encyclopedia of Jewish Food, real masterpiece.

This is the Gil Marks World of Jewish Cooking book taken and amplified as to be used for small groups. It is a good book, the author not only very familiar with the recipes and cooking, but, the history of the use of the types of food and the history of the Jewish peoples that ate them.

bought it to replace my old copy that had fallen apart - very happy with it

Loved his other books so much more. But could not resist getting this one to see what he does for the big affairs.

I have used many of the recipes out of this book and it is a great read with a lot of entertaining material!

Gil Marks has done a fine job in presenting a variety of menus for all occassions. The recipes are calculated for generous party size servings, making it easy to plan events and shopping lists. The recipes are clear, straight forward and tasty, the book layout very user friendly. This book might also be a good resource for caterers.

There have been so many times when I've had recipes that I've had to double or triple and here Gil has done it for us.I love the new and different ideas he has for traditional meals.Whenever I have an excess of a particular food item, I refer to this book and get so many optionsEverything tastes yum from this book!

New series featuring Runners and Chasers, those who 'run' from the light at their time of death and those asked by the Lord to chase them. Interesting concept, and presented very well. Jack Carter is a private eye who is accosted in his office one day by a strange visitor, then immediately followed by another enigmatic visitor, who teaches Jack about what he has become involved with. Jack is skeptical at first, but he follows his heart and soon is on fire to serve the Lord. The rest of the book chronicles Jack's education and apprenticeship as he works toward full Chaser status, then follows him on his first few cases. Some nice subplots going on simultaneously make this book a good, but quick read. Having read several of the author's Jason Strong series, I feel the writing in this book is much better and fluid, with more depth to the characters.

I only picked up this book because I enjoy the author's Jason Strong detective stories. This book is a Christian fantasy. I have read many more mysteries than fantasies and only read about ten Christian books in my entire life (all Christian love stories) so I wasn't sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. If like me you are looking for something different than vampires and werewolves in a fantasy, then you will enjoy the intriguing premise of this book. I would, however, caution those who believe in the literal Word of the Bible that this book may not be a good choice. As other reviewers have noted, this book's plot isn't mentioned in the Bible and is perhaps actually denied within it. Since I've read all of the Sookie (True Blood) and Twilight books, I know that fantasy fiction is just for fun.Once you accept the premise of runners and chasers, this book is a real page-turner. I actually read the entire book in one sitting. I love all the characters and liked the relationships between them. Each runner also has distinct and facinating back stories. I enjoyed the two romances within the book: one just beginning and one long-standing relationship.I only have one complaint: the story is not complete by itself. The main plot continues in the second book in the series. Luckily I was reading a Kindle edition so it was easy to get the next book.

The introduction set the tone for this book. Understanding that this is only fantasy not a heavy biblically spiritual concept to be picked apart, I went into the story with the right frame of mind. Yes, I really enjoy stories that have connections between angels and humans, This is not really one of those. It is clean light suspense with spiritual twist just as the author said. It put me in mind of that old TV show in the 60's/70's with the P.I. that was always getting in trouble. I guess Jack's old Ford Ranchero and Daniel's Impala set that scene. I had trouble accepting the cell phone and the reference to 2004 into my scenery. Especially loved the character described as "think of Yoda from the Star Wars".Thank you, John. This story is very refreshing.

CROSSOVER(Christian Adventure) (THE CHASER CHRONICLES Book 1)Starts out with the PI and he's taped to his chair, big headache and something, a ghost shape is in front of him telling him he will have a choice to make.He learns a few days later he can either follow Jesus or go after the runners and make them crossover. There are chasers and this ghost wants him to become one...This book is out there as far as my beliefs but was a good read because the author describes things in such detail you feel as if you are there.Loved all the action, adventure and investigating as we got to go visit in several places.Received this book free on Amazon and this is my honest opinion.

This engaging, fast-paced book reminds me of old TV first person detective mysteries.The Good:-Consistent use of first person.-An engaging story that's griping till the end.-Sly humor-The beginning created mystery, which helps allure the reader in.-The budding romance between the detective and cop is well laid out.-Very creative storyThe Bad:-Nothing in this story takes away from John C Dalglish crafting a clever story.The Unsure: (My opinion: what I didn't like or do not prefer. This will not lower a rating unless it overly distracts from the story.)-Non-prescription drug use. Like dang, as the story ends, the main character pops down pills till no end is in sight.-He loves his mother and visits her often. They call and talk a lot. I often disliked their conversations, and I think it distracted from the story.

Enjoyed the book and though fiction, the book kept you wrapped up and wanting to keep reading to see what was happening next. Good example a book can be written without profanity and sex as the main theme. Thank you for this.

This is a Christian book, but not preachy at all. The warfare is so far beyond biblical possibilities that you have to simply decide to read it for fun. The characters are good and even likable. The "bad guys" are pitiful. The action is fun. It's an enjoyable read.

Life after death fantasy, postulating the ability to skip out, at least for a time, on judgment. Some wish to stay for quite banal reasons, some out of sadness and some to seek vengeance or some just like the power of being able to cause harm. There are those called to bring these people in, some go meekly, but those of a vicious nature learn how to absorb strength and power and are not willing. They can cause much harm to people and even their chasers. Chasers are kind of like cops going after parole violators, some who are violent and some not It is an adventure tale with religious overtones but not particularly dogmatic. Was a fun read.

This volume, as the previous one, begins with the traditional prayers (Apostles Creed, the Our Father, the Hail Mary, Glory Be, Acts of Contrition, Love, Faith, et cetera). The chapters are broken down in discussing The Ten Commandments, the Sacraments, sins, Laws of the Church, and the like. At the back of this volume are traditional hymns.This is the most in-depth volume. It is easy to understand, with questions and greater n-depth answers and explanations that relate to the subject matter in each chapter. This is the catechism to read to learn (or brush up on) of the true tenants of the Church, not the New Church of Vatican II.This volume is written for more advanced Roman Catholic student. Each successive volume (starting with Volume 1) becomes more in-depth and appropriate to the student’s grade level.I highly recommend this series.

A priest told me that this book explained penance and confession and what it meant years ago and what has been lost over the years and that it would help me in my understanding reconcilation today. As a returning Catholic to the church after many years it has helped me immensely in reconciliation and all aspects of my faith. I had heard that the Baltimore Catechism was very strict and that Catholics of many years who were taught there faith on this book were taught to recite it word for word. I had a very liberal catechism and did not learn it and therefore believe this is why I fell away from the church as I did not know my faith. I welcomed this book with its structure and strictiness and its procedures and God's organization. and strictness as I believe God does wish us to adhere to his rules as they are for our own good and for the good of all mankind.I would encourage anyone who was brought up in the liberal 1970's and did not receive the appropriate Catholic instruction to purchase this Baltimore Catechism and the other part of the Baltimore Catechism series. I also found attending RCIA and reading the Bible everyday invaluable and joyous parts of religious education.

This book gives outstanding explanations to topics and doctrines that are rarely taught in today's religious education programs. The language is straight-forward; the analogies are excellent; and many of the disciplines have been updated to conform with VC2. For those who want serious and cogent explanations of Catholic doctrines and practices, get this book. I likes the Kindle version so much, I purchased the paperback.

Brief, well organized and succinct. Very well organized. Want to know what Catholics believe? Get a copy. Well worth the money.

I had hoped it would be in the traditional Q&A format. The information is in there, just not as easy to find as the previous editions.

It may be an old way but it's still relevant to conversion! Just like my friends grand parents or his mother of old! It sakes the questions and gives you the answers! There are 4 books! I suggest getting all of them! They are free books!

Philippa Gregory has always been a really good writer whose books always seem to have been thoroughly researched and thus historically accurate. I must admit, however, that my interest in British royalty did not match her prolific writings about them. It was with great relief, therefore, that I read this incredible dramatization of the sea-merchant component of the slave trade in Great Britain in the early 1800's. Very suspenseful and one of the best reads I've had in 2016. I bought this as a gift; my friend who I bought it for loves it and can't put it down. Thank you, Ms. Gregory! You are a mainstay for one who likes fiction, but is fussy about reading something worthwhile. This writer is right up there with Barbara Kingsolver, T.C. Boyle and the few others of that ilk who are currently writing.

This is an intriguing book by the author, with a story line that is simple enough. Frances Scott, an impoverished thirty-four year old, gently reared daughter of a cleric, is left to fend for herself by her dead father. Her uncle, Lord Scott, has been assisting her and has found her work as a governess, a job that she loathes. When an upstart tradesman, Josiah Cole, proposes matrimony, she jumps at the chance. It is a marriage of the utmost convenience.What she does not know is that her husband and his spinster sister, Sarah, trade in slaves, as well as other commodities. When a shipment of slaves comes in, Frances is expected to train the slaves to be servants that can then be sold to wealthy families. After all, having an African servant was all the rage in late eighteenth century England. Her instruction of her captives is a slow process, giving Frances an opportunity to get to know her slaves and the cruelties that have been inflicted upon them. She is, however, without resources to help them.Along the way, she falls in love with Mehuru, her major domo, and he with her. Therein lies the rub. In eighteenth century England, it was unheard of for a lady of gentle breeding to do so, and Frances has not the strength to follow her heart. Meanwhile, her ambitious husband is oblivious to all that is going on in his household, and involves himself in one scheme after another, trusting on some new found friendships that are suspicious at best. When he finds that his "friends" have merely taken him for a ride, all hell breaks loose.Much of the dialogue between Frances and Mehuru is pretty laughable, reading like a bad Harlequin romance. Their love affair simply does not ring true. Moreover, the characters in the book are too one dimensional and are pretty much caricatures. Overall, the book is a choppy, uneven affair, but a still a moderately enjoyable one, if one is a fan of the author. Others may not be so forgiving. Still, there are parts of the book that are somewhat interesting, and I was sufficiently intrigued to get the Masterpiece Theatre production of the book for which the author herself wrote the screenplay.

Philippa Gregory is an enjoyable and dependable story teller. You know that you will meet well developed characters who act out unlikely plots and hold your interest, even if story lines become a bit predictable. A Respectable Trade, the story of a series of unlikely events set in Bristol toward the end of the 18th Century, follows this Gregory formula and solidly delivers.Mehuru is a priest in the African kingdom of Yoruba and is on a quest to save his country from the ravages of slavery when he is beset upon and captured by white slavers from England. Perhaps ironically, his own slave is captured as well. Meanwhile, back in England, landless and aging Frances Scott is wearing her welcome thin under the roof of her uncle's lordly family and thus applies for a job as governess. Instead of a job, she is offered marriage by the man who interviewed her, one Josiah Cole. Cole is a struggling shipping merchant with ambition who sees ties to the Scott family as a stepping stone on his road to wealth and respect. His cold fish sister Sarah isn't too keen on Josiah's attempt to climb the social ladder. With no other options, Frances marries beneath her station and tries to make the best of it.The charges she was originally interviewed to govern turn out to be a dozen or so African men, women and children. Sarah and Josiah believe that they can train these select slaves to be excellent house servants who speak the Queen's English and within 6 months turn a pretty profit by selling to select Bristol families. Frances, who has never considered the grisly details about how her families (new and of origin) make their money, finds herself questioning all she has known. She sure likes the comforts of upper class living... but when she suddenly realizes the "stock" have faces, names and feelings, Frances discovers new feelings of her own. Is she an accessory to a crime? A teacher? A respectalbe wife from a respectable family? Her feelings become especially new and uncomfortable when Mehuru walks into her dingy merchant dining room...The details of the story which follow are both slightly predictable and unfathomable considering the time (Mehuru quickly becomes fluent speaking and reading English and manages to be rather mobile and unsupervised for what one might expect for a slave in Bristol during the height of the trade). However, the themes which underlie the story are well worth exploring. Is the grass really greener on the other side? Does wealth equate respectability? Does race matter? Does social class? How much risk should one take when investing? How much research? Where does wealth come from? Who really pays? Can love really over come all?In our ever growing global capitalist economy, these are important questions to consider. Why not reflect upon social justice and responsibility while reading a solidly enjoyable novel?

Over all I think this book on lettering is pretty decent. The author has chosen to give an overview of the possibilities for hand lettering by giving a brief introduction of the various sorts of lettering one might do and she includes instruction and practice pages too. While yhe content is slim, it is well written, logically laid out and not overwhelming. Certainly the book is worth the purchase price.However, the author makes a disingenuous, and unecessary claim that, somehow using a brush pen for lettering is not "calligraphy" and that, in order to do "real calligraphy" one must use a dip pen and ink. She then explains that the method, practice and storkes are the same for each but still, one can onky claim "calligraphy" if one uses a dip pen and ink. This claim is complete hogwash snd akin to claiming one isn't eating sushi if one doesn't use chopsticks to do so.The truth is that there are many styles of calligraphy (which simply means beautiful writing) and many of them can be done with a brush pen or a dip pen and ink. A brush pen is simply a tool. It is up to the artist to apply that tool in an approprite way. To make a distinction between one tool or another as being the only "real" way is misguided at best. At worst it discourages students by creating artificial elitisim around a tool that has been evolving for thousands of years. There is no "real calligraphy", instead there are just different styles of letters and an assortment of tools (including nibs, quills, fountain pens, reed pens, brush pens and even ball point pens) to achieving this thing we call beautiful writing.

I love this book! It is exactly what I was looking for. I have enjoyed trying to do some hand letter designs and decided to make it my summer hobby. The book has tutorials that are short and to the point. It teaches you one technique and you can spend as much time practicing as you want before creating your "final piece" at the end of the tutorial. There's only one practice page for each tutorial which is fine by me because I didn't want to buy a book with a ton of blank pages...I can use a notebook to practice. I like the final piece page because it's almost like a test for myself before moving on to the next tutorial. This book is thick and covers tons of stuff. At the end it even has a tutorial on how to digitize your work. As a beginner this is exactly what I was hoping to find.

Learning the basics of how to start a drawing is essential to anyone with an itch to paint or draw and this is a great way to learn. It really helps you learn to draw from beginning to end. The practice pages were so fun and in some cases funny [ originals where definitely better then my attempt at them ]. This book was an absolute blast! Learning to do a variety of different things from plants to letters was just such a blast. Stop and smell the roses...

You will develop your own style and add to what you learn from this author. This book could also be used to help someone who has poor penmanship. Instructions are given for each letter of the alphabet in upper and lower case. There are practice pages or use tracing paper to help make an exact copy and practice until the technique is perfected. Once this skill has been accomplished the applications are endless..

I find myself writing absolutely beautifully on every writing surface. It's becoming habit. I also had no idea workbooks/coloring books were still all the rage. I love having space to practice for a book like this. It's considerate of my needs as a reader that I might not always have paper lying around. It was a wonderful practical element that this book provided the pages for me to practice the lettering as I read about it. If you like to doodle, if you like to craft, this book is for you! It's going to be a perfect addendum to your holiday gift prep, I promise you!

This book has been a fantastic start for me in botanical drawing. It has helped me perfect some of my drawings and I would highly recommend it. I will be referring to it for many years to come.

This workbook was just what my lettering needed! It seemed to cover everything too: from beginning strokes to master and then on toserif, san serif, calligraphy, faux calligraphy, modern calligraphy, block letters, drawing, shadows, texture, flourishes and putting it all together to make sense and be beautiful. I definitely recommend it!

The paper version is probably a lot more helpful. There are helpful tips and examples but its difficult to practice just looking at a small screen. For someone with experience it would be a great information source. Not for beginners.
