This book is worth its weight in gold. I say that because the words that are written in this book have no doubt come from the hearts of men that have been refined by the fire of God. You will not find this book in the libraries of 95% of Pastors in America today because if it were, there would be no way to deliver these self-help lullabies they call sermons. Reading through some of these prayers and meditations put in right perspective in my simple mind the subtle words in Genesis 5:24 where it says....and Enoch walked with God.. Im not promoting the verse, or Enoch, or the fact that he walked with God, the point I am trying to make is that I was always intrigued yet never able to fully say in my "Christian walk" that I fully grasp the magnitude of what it means to "walk with God" though God is in me, and I in He which also goes for every born again believer. I thought about Enoch walking with God when reading Valley of Vision, I read and see many who walked with God though likely not as Enoch, yet this masterful work by these servants of the Lord have allowed me to have a better understanding and desire to truly WALK WITH GOD.

This wonderful book should be in your place of devotional reading. I pick up every copy I can find of this book at used book stores or here. It's changed the way I pray, it's walked me into understanding of God that I wouldn't have discovered on my own. Prayer shapes us, and I love the wisdom of those who have gone before, seen a different world, shaping my life in God

This is the most incredible collection of prayers I have ever seen. These are actual prayers from our Christian fore-fathers who really knew how to pray to Almighty God. Something I believe most modern day Christians have long forgotten. This book has changed my prayer life. I keep reading many of the prayers over and over, each time delving deeper into the prayer. It has drawn me to a more meaningful quiet time. I can hardly wait to get to it in the morning.

This is by far my favorite devotional. In my highs and lows, this collection of hymns, prayers and poems has been a faithful, humbling and encouraging companion, always pointing me back to the Lord. You will find no words of self-help within its pages, only theologically sound and Christ centered words of truth. I highly recommend. No other devotional has ministered to my soul as this one has. One of my most precious books.

I came across this book because Chuck Swindoll quoted one of its prayers ("Man a Nothing") in one of his own books, and my first impression after reading that prayer was one of having found a great and rare treasure. I actually copied that prayer out of Swindoll's book word-for-word into my own Bible, and read it over and over, many times. Several years ago, I then bought a bonded leather copy of "The Valley of Vision", and without exaggeration would have to state that aside from my Bible this is the most helpful, most theologically sound, inspiring spiritual work (or more accurately, collection of works) that I have ever read. As you know by now, this is a collection of prayers from various Puritan authors all compiled and arranged into a single, valuable resource for readers to be able to draw upon today. In John chapter 7, it is recorded for us how the Pharisees sent officers to arrest Jesus. Upon returning from their mission empty-handed these officers were asked by the Pharisees why it was that they had not taken Jesus and brought Him to them. Their simple, yet profound answer was that "Never has man spake like this man". They were amazed, astounded, and obviously affected by Jesus' words, and their bosses the Pharisees accused them of having been deceived. I can assure you that if you read the prayers of this book, slowly and deliberately, carefully and thoughtfully, earnestly and sincerely, that you will be like the officers of the Pharisees and find your own self to be amazed, astounded, and deeply affected. People today just do not write the way these Puritans wrote. One of the criticisms I have read about this book is the old, flowery, Puritan language and use of words being out of style and perhaps difficult to understand. May I suggest to you, the potential reader, that the very use of words and phrases of which we are not much accustomed to today could be the primary means by which your attention is powerfully captured, and your mind drawn deeply into the message the writer is conveying in their written prayer, causing you to thereby pick up on the earnestness, piety, and godliness that you will find in them. They are so utterly inspiring; these writers have eloquently penned the thoughts which I have had, or that I want to have, but could never accurately or adequately put into words. I can't think of too many works that have affected me as much as this collection of prayers has done and as a result this book has the prominent place of being on my nightstand, right next to my Bible where it is easily accessible and often read. Another criticism I have read is that the editor Arthur Bennett did not place the actual Puritan authors name next to each individual prayer, and thereby people are hindered from being able to know who wrote which prayer, and to seek out writings from that author. Let me just submit that I think leaving the individual authors names off of each prayer is fitting for this book and the humble, godly attitude that is conveyed throughout. None of these men would care to be lifted up in the minds of their listeners or readers, but would rather have any glory be given solely to the Subject and Inspiration of their works. The editor gives a list of the men from whom these prayers originated in the Preface and Bibliography found in the front of the book for those interested in following up with more reading of their other works. I would venture to say that most of the Puritan writers, and certainly all listed as authors of the prayers in this book, are without a doubt very worthy of further reading. Here's a suggestion for you: purchase the less costly paperback edition of this gem and begin to explore the treasures that you will find inside. Once you have determined the usefulness and the value of having this book in your own library, you can then invest in the more durable bonded leather copy to keep forever and graciously pass along your paperback copy to another believer, thereby sharing a very valuable resource in our pursuit of the heart of God. They can then do the same. As we all press to become more like Christ, this book can and will be used by God to help us in our individual sanctification. I know you will enjoy and profit from having it.

A masterful writer combined with a discussion of great artists, what a treat for someone who appreciates both.

I like reading about the art world and creativity and even if I didn't I would like to read what Janet Malcolm Writes about it. It was a nice surprise to find that one of the players in her art world drama had gone to my high school in Cincinnati and I always wondered what happened to him. The role of esoteric art critic in New York City seems to be a natural extension of who he was as an outspoken, rebellious student in an elite, college preparatory high school in the Midwest. I also find it interesting when anybody can make some sense out of the mishmash of what I view as the New York City art world. I believe Tom Wolfe is correct when he said that the word makes the message in the art world. It is not what you see is what you get it is what you see is formed by the art critic you are listening to about that piece of artwork.

I got bogged down in the VERY long essay about Artforum magazine, and I don't agree with Malcolm's enthusiasm for J.D. Salinger's writing (he's got a very narrow focus and his characters are really more petulant than anything else). But the David Salle piece which opens the collection (and furnishes its title) is a masterpiece.She also skillfully demolished the blowsy excess of the catalog of the SanFrancisco Art Museum's Diane Arbus exhibit, making the point that learning every last jot of trivia about a person does not contribute to understanding them. I will remember this line forever: "What Helen of Troy did in her spare time, and what she was "really like" as a person, are not questions that torture us."

Some people have complained here that these essays have appeared elsewhere and therefore are not "new." The truth is, most essay collections have work in them that has appeared elsewhere. That doesn't prevent this from being a riveting read. Even the ones I've read before, like the title essay, surprised me all over again. Janet Malcolm is a brilliant thinker, a cool and clear-eyed journalist, and a beautiful writer. All it takes is one paragraph before you know you're in the thrall of an authoritative, interesting voice and mind.

I love Janet Malcolm's writing style and prose and therefore can't be objective. This compilation has been fascinating. She continues to astound me with her perceptive voice and remarkable wisdom. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in the arts.

I love Janet Malcolm's work, just about every word of it, so I am unqualified to review this book. To me, reading each piece was like eating exquisite dark chocolate, superb smoked salmon, and so on: fill in the blanks with your own cherished tasty treats. I'm sorry, I just can't be objective about Janet Malcolm. But I can tell you which is my favorite: her write-up on the collection of characters (art historians, art critics, editors, and artists) who shed light on the enigma of _Artforum_ magazine in the 1980s. That may sound arcane to you, but for me, it's riveting material. She even makes Bloomsbury freshly interesting! Enough said.

Fascinating book that I will read again and again.

She is one of my favorite writers, offering such a complex, nuanced version of a story, making me think. This is a collection of essays and some of them are not so successful as her other books, but I was glad to read it.

I am a fan of Leonard Cohen and wanted to have his lyrics. I found this book which is in it's Kindle version just fantastic. You can review everyone of his lyrics listening at the same time the son through Spotify. Very good use of the advantages of technology

I am a fairly casual fan of Leonard Cohen. I grew up with "Suzanne" and I love "Hallelujah." I also have an interest in the back-story of songs, where they come from, what they are supposed to mean, etc.This book scratches a lot of those itches. It contains the lyrics for about 50 to 60 of Cohen's songs, and a short paragraph after the lyrics offers some background to the song, including a bit of Cohen's biography and who covered the song and/or what Cohen album the song can be found on.This book offers a new dimension for appreciating Cohen's lyrics.

If you like his music you will appreciate knowing all the words. He was a true poet and filled with a great spirit.Book is well put together, arrived quickly and in perfect condition.

Birdie is apparently a ‘simple-minded’ young girl, as her family call her, and is easily led astray. Since she married farmer Walter Ockwell she hasn’t been seen or heard from and her parents, though they have tried, haven’t had any success in finding her and talking to her.The Ockwell family are fiercely private people and won’t let anyone near Birdie. The family seem to be ruled by Walter’s sister and are very well know in their local area.Arrowood and Barnett take a look into the Ockwell‘s and find out some disturbing information which they go to the local police officer with, though he refuses to help and warns Arrowood to stay away. There’s also the issue of someone who helped them with their enquires going missing too.Arrowood’s not easily beaten though and won’t give up until he’s completed what’s he’s been paid for.I’m a huge Sherlock Holmes fan so when I saw this book I knew I had to read it. At first, I didn’t realise it was the second in a series, but it is fine to read as a stand-alone so not reading the first didn’t hinder me in any way.Arrowood works in the same field as Sherlock Holmes but his methods are completely different. He studies people and their actions and emotions rather than rely on the clues to lead him to the culprit or cause. He also gets paid a lot less than Sherlock’s and takes on poor peoples cases. He also seems to detest Sherlock.The book is narrated by Barnett, Arrowood’s assistant. Author Mick Finlay has certainly done his research into the Victorian era and also the plight of disabled people back in those days. This comes across strong and there is no doubt when turning the pages which era in history you are within.I favour the chase in mystery/detective books far more than the outcome and this book didn’t disappoint, (neither did the finale). After enjoying Arrowood #1 so much, I was anxious to get started on #2 when it was released in the US in February - I was not disappointed - I think there's wisely less emphasis in this one about the running gag/storyline of Arrowood's antipathy to Sherlock Holmes, but when it's mentioned it's very good and I like how the author uses actual Holmes stories as a basis - there's a real familial touch to this series: rather than just a Holmes/Watson knockoff, there's great and regular engagement w/ best friends, sisters, etc. of Arrowood and his partner.The author does a good job of describing both the "cloistered" environment of the farm and their exploitation of some disabled people and the threads that tie them to a conspiracy in the city of London. I very much admired Arrowood's kindness to the victims throughout the story. Arrowood and his partner never have an easy time - their cases involve their brains but also a considerable amount of bumps and bruises and danger which helps raise the stakes in the stories. He has a great sense of justice, even if it doesn't necessarily put coins in his pocket - as in #1, the original case and client becomes less important as the conspiracy evolves.The author really excels at secondary characters and in making the smells and sounds of the underside of Victorian London come alive. This is not a fireside cozy...it's Victorian noir and is rough and muddy...and good.If there was a downside, it's the use of a narrative device that was employed in #1: the unreliable client. It worked well in #1 and well enough in #2, but could quickly get overused.The audio narration is very good and does great justice to the story and the author's work.Really looking forward to #3!

He just needs one big case to make him as well known as that other consulting detective.The Barclays engage Arrowood’s services complaining that their daughter’s husband won’t let them see or talk with her. They are concerned that Birdie has been harmed or is being held against her will on the husband’s rural farm. Birdie is slow and her husband, Walter, has served time for blinding a man in a fit of rage. Despite Arrowood’s concern with the Barclay’s authenticity, Arrowood and Barnett, his scrappy Watson, investigate and find an unusual case indeed.The Murder Pit is the second entry in the series but can be read as a standalone. It is an enjoyable and humorous dive into lower class London and the Holmes canon. Arrowood’s appetite and marital problems seem genuine. Barnett doesn’t always agree with Arrowood but continues to protect him from physical harm.Overall, the unusual setting, superb characterizations and witty banter make the Murder Pit an excellent mystery choice. 4 stars!Thanks to Mira and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for an honest review.

My son has been taking piano for 4-5 years (started as a 1st grader) and this is the next book in the Alfred Series he is starting. I also used the Alfred Series when I was younger (in the 80's) so it has been around a long time, and is such a great piano learning book series. I would highly recommend to anyone teaching or that has a child in piano lessons.

Great for teachers and students, I used Alfreds taking lessons and now I'm giving lessons with them. I prefer the Bastien series for starting out beginners but for carrying on Alfred's Basic has a great setup. It's very challenging but not too much that it overwhelms.

Alfred's is a terrific piano book series---good songs. My son likes them a lot.

Great book and so much easier than going to your local bookstore.

pages 21 to 86 are Korean-English, 87-166 are English-Korean. The rest of the book to page 311 has a lot of useful information on the grammar, word endings, colors, numbers, etc. so there is a lot of good things and overall I am glad I got it. However there are a few negatives, hence the lower rating.The biggest negative for me is the size of the Korean writing. Korean letters aren’t supposed to be able to fit within the same line size as the English letters. And yet they try their best to do that, to the point that my 20/25 eyes need a magnifying glass to read some of the more complicated letters, and even then the symbols are so crowded together they are unreadable.Otherwise I would fault them for organization, especially in the last part, with the grammar, etc. I say that not knowing a good solution, but I think it could be better than it is. It is a restricted vocabulary to be sure, but that is to be expected, but some words can be used as different parts of speech, and frequently they only give one.This is a great supplement to my other Korean learning tools, namely a class and the Duolingo app.

I'm currently an exchange student studying at SNU. I purchased multiple english-korean/korean-english dictionaries before coming here, and of them all this is by far the best. Although it doesn't have all the words possible in the actual dictionary part, the middle section with various particles and conjugations is incredibly helpful, as is the phrasebook/cultural segment towards the end. It's super helpful when I need to translate Korean to English and vice versa, or simply need to figure out how to correctly phrase a sentence, or to even memorize short lines I need to know before going out and interacting with Koreans. Buy this book! It's amazing.

I consider myself an intermediate learner of the Korean language. This book exceeded my expectations! Not only does it give you TONS of words to learn but it also helps you with Korean sentence structure. It explains any and everything you need to know. BUY THIS BOOK! And no, you do not need to be an advanced learner to benefit from this book.

For awhile I thought I needed a comprehensive dictionary to help with learning Korean but this book gave more than the typical dictionary. The section at the end with conjugations and suffixes is the main reason I bought this book. I like to read through it when I need to review. The dictionary enteries are limited but I haven't had a problem yet with finding a word.

This book is a great resource.I own TONS of Korean language learning books. This is one that I carry around with me.It is the ONLY book so far that has a section called "Sentence endings and Helping verbs"This is CRITICAL to understand how to make sentences...and once you learn an ending, you can practice it with different verbs.

Excellent dictionalry and phrasebook. Easy to use. Plenty of words dozens of useful phrases. Product matches product description well.

This has not only a very useful dictionary but also many useful phrases for a variety of purposes. Great for travelers!

I highly recommend this to anyone visiting or living in Korea. It won't teach you Hangul (Korean) or English but it will get you by. Neat little book (good size by the way) and I highly recommend it,

Dr. Angelou does not censor anything; She wants us to know it all. It is so true, straightforward, and uncensored that many white parents have attempted to ban this book from schools. This memorable and mysterious autobiography - originally published in 1969 - was followed by another masterpiece entitled: Gather Together In My Name. Both books are available in audio format recorded by Random House Audio. It is amazing that we can hear Dr. Angelou reading her own books to us just like a grandmother putting us to sleep with her adventurous bed-time stories.Dr. Maya Angelou, who has been honored and awarded numerous times, is a pure soul writing about the evil world of the racist America keeping a matching voice on each chapter of her life. When she is writing about her experiences as a five-year-old, you hear a five-year-old talking to you. This book became the best-seller immediately after it was published. What added to my personal itch to read this book when I was first introduced to it was the fact that Dr. Angelou has described William Shakespeare as one of her strongest influence on her life and works. Shakespeare is my all-time favorite “pennist.”Buy it, read it, keep it, reread it, highlight it, talk about it, advertise it, buy more of it and give it out as a gift, learn from it, and apply what you’ve learned from it in your daily life. I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings is coming from a heart and soul of someone who had to witness the unnecessary, harsh, and brutal insults that no ordinary human being can bear. Maya Angelou writes the story of a human who was pushed to her limits by the ugliness of this world and while being in a saddest cage, sang the happiest song. Once precious Maya Angelou told her younger generation that seem to be unable to cope with the racism in the past and present:“You should be angry. You must not be bitter. Bitterness is like cancer. It eats upon the host. It doesn’t do anything to the object of its displeasure. So use that anger. You write it. You paint it. You dance it. You march it. You vote it. You do everything about it. You talk it. Never stop talking it.”

Maya Angelou is, of course, very famous, and the title of this book is known to most people. For years, with a few exceptions, I have been reading nonfiction. I have been intensely interested in a few subjects, which changed somewhat as I grew older, but rarely turned to fiction. It was no doubt because of an attempt to remedy my ignorance that I picked this up, as well as the fact that it was only two dollars on Book Bub. I now understand why Maya Angelou was such a giant figure in American literature. In rich, sometimes poetic language, she brings the reader into her world of social tensions and appreciation of her culture. She is able to demonstrate the degree of her strength and intelligence, and I came to a great appreciation of this major writer.

I'm not sure why it took me so long to read this book! I've heard about it for years, seen it referenced in other books and movies, yet I always avoided reading it myself. After coming across it again on the Amazon store, I decided to go ahead. Maybe I would get bored one day and skim it.Oh my goodness.As soon as I started reading it, I didn't stop. Starting at 7:00 pm., by the time the birds signaled dawn, I finished the last page with tears in my eyes.Aside from the obviously touching story, Maya Angelou is a truly gifted writer. She was able to transform her writing as her character (herself) aged. She wrote from the mind of a child in the beginning, and by the end, she had a new maturity.Beautiful. Worth all the accolades it's received thus far.

I wasn't excited about this book before reading it, but boy was I wrong! This book is actually fantastic! Angelou writes about such heavy issues (abandonment, sexual assault, racism, sexual confusion, etc.), and yet her writing is so crafty and crisp that the reader does not feel overwhelmed or put off. The writing is so fun and engaging. Angelou makes use of figurative language to paint vivid and delightful pictures of her childhood experiences. She does a great job of communicating so much in less than 300 pages. There are many little gems embedded on every page; this book is so rich with meaning and literary technique.

This story of the author's childhood is beautifully told with honesty, dignity and hope. While some scenes are intense and painful, all shine through the eyes of this bright child who views the world, even at its harshest, with wonder. The chapter describing her graduation from eighth grade encompasses all of these emotions: the joy of a child who has a achieved a valued goal and is being recognized as a 'star' by her community, only to be told by a crass political speaker that she and her kind have no hope to excel beyond their position as dictated by their race; followed by a realization that the pride and defiance of their very survival has made them strong enough to give lie to his claims.While The Caged Bird has the attraction of most good childhood autobiographies, showing through young eyes how someone can overcome the worst kind of adversity and thrive, it has another dimension as well. The author reports with dignified distance on the events of her childhood, but not without critical judgement. In the course of telling her story, she also give insight into her culture and the reasons behind it.Beyond the wonderful style, it's a worthwhile and enlightening read.
