These books are a wealth of homesteading knowledge. Well worth the money for anyone wanting to learn skills that most have forgotten. I do wish that some of the pictures would be a little cleared or in color. Some of the instructional or plant I.D. pictures would benefit greatly from that.

After reading the first Foxfire book, I fell in love with the old ways and the simpler life the people of the Blue Ridge lived. I even shared it with my scouts, and we made soap out of campfire ashes and discarded bacon grease on a recent campout. Book 2 contains even more of the same, including how to build a primitive log cabin, make a wagon, preserve vegetables and what plants are good to eat in spring. There's also a complete guide to stripping a hog down and using nearly every piece of it!

My son wanted the entire Foxfire collection so I purchased all of the books from Amazon. He has read all of the books now and while some of the volumes he said did not have much practical instructional information he still enjoyed reading them immensely if just for the story aspect. These books are great for anyone who loves to read about old-fashioned ways of living before modern conveniences were commonplace or for someone who wants to learn how many things were done before things were so readily available. These books would be great for anyone who is of the "survivalist" mindset or anyone who just wants to learn to be more self sufficient.

These are just really good books! Grew up ready them at my aunts house. Educational and wonderful stories on how things use to be done. Everything from moonshine, old time medicine and ghost stories. Ive read them numerous times and they never get old. I hope to get the entire collection of foxfire books so my kids can grow up reading these wonderful books too.

I love all the Foxfire books--they're describing the lives my ancestors lived. They are fascinating and touching to the point of bringing on tears. People like this don't seem to exist any more.

These were ordered for a gift and on has a little rip. That does not make me happy.

This is not the first book on Microsoft Azure that I've read but it is the first one that I understood. By following their step by step instructions and adapting it to my needs I now have a Azure SQL Database provisioned and running as a back up database for when my server fails. I also used this connection as a means of estimating the cost by testing for the performance level needed.The book walked me through setting up the account, configuration and database schema. It was reassuring to know that this would not blow up on me. I had tried this with Google's cloud and got a bigger bill than I expected.The authors then move to this issue of indexes in SQL Database and how to migrate data in and out of SQL Database.

Great intro to a wide variety of Technologies that are necessary for making a SQL Database. The example in this book takes you step by step covering SQL DB on Azure, the entity model, MVC, the website that will "publish" the database, and finally to the apps that will Connect to the database via the web. Instructive and Clear Reading. After finishing this book I went on Reading books covering in more details MVC, HTML5, JavaScript, Bootstrap etc but this book was a great intro to all of these subjects and I will use this book when building my own Azure SQL DB that I will use for prototyping purposes.

OK, there are few Azure books out there and this one did get me through the first few weeks on a new Azure project. I'm glad for that but I don't see anything of depth to get me to return to the book as a reference for improving my processes.

This book would have been great 2 years ago, but things have moved on enough that it can be difficult at times to follow along. A new version of this book would be most welcome at this point to incorporate all the new features and the new Azure interface.

So much has changed in Azure, I am surprised there is not a second edition to this. Its a well written book for 2014, however in 2019 the steps & pictures to match the current Azure portal anymore. I over paid on this one.

I figured I'd let you know that chapter 1 is no longer possible as the SQL Management Portal is no longer. This means you have to manage and develop your Azure SQL databases using Visual Studio or SSMS. I wouldn't have mind, but it would be nice to have the actual scripts to create the tables as well as the INSERT statements just in case the portal was no longer available. I searched for the updates on the site, but no comment there. If I didn't continue to chapter 2 I would have definitely returned this to Amazon as chapter 1 could be ripped out as its outdated. If any more updates are like this and half the book is outdated, then I will return this book as it is no longer functional, even as a reference. Let's pray that if you risk your money on this book it can at least have UPDATED content on their support web site and perhaps a discount on an updated revision.[EDIT] I bumped up to 4 stars and have to revise my comment. SQL Management Portal DOES work. However, it appears that the DNS entry for you to access it takes a day or two. If you create a new server it may take a while before the magical MANAGE button appears but once it does, all databases will be able to be managed through the portal as stated in the book. I wish a caution was inserted as I wasted time trying to pull my hair out going over and over and thinking that they removed this feature.I've scanned the rest of the book and its for mostly developer as stated in the title. I wished there were more admin stuff though as how to provision servers as VMs and how to connect with those. Thankfully, the comment on having the script is later revealed in the book and its ok. The only downside is that mostly they talk about using SQL as PaaS rather than IaaS, but you can't have everything.

First book of Bookchin's I've read, but it will not be the last. This book has an incredibly forward-thinking message, especially when one considers that he was writing these essays when the full importance and transformative value of technology had not been realized. I wish he were still with us, as I'd love to read his thoughts on the world today. Recommended for futurists, anarchists of all stripes, and anyone interested in societal change.

Bookchin offers a brilliant vision for a liberatory revolution in the technological age. More than 50 years ago he thoughtfully anticipates the potential of technological development to create a localized participatory economic system. Essentializing face-to-face interactions, the major technologically driven social phenomenon that he does not fully anticipate is the advent of social media and its role in facilitating authentic interpersonal connections (the authenticity of these connections is debatable but that the possibilities move qualitatively past the telephones of his day is not).That said, the eBook transcription is TERRIBLE with footnotes and headers all over the place.

Ecology plus technology plus a life-time background in revolutionary politics produces Bookchin's masterpiece. This book is well-known, though probably not especially well-read, in anarchist circles. The collection of essays hit on a number of topics orbiting the core notion of corporate profit versus a healthy world and a reestablishment of anarchist ideals in a world (okay, a portion of the world) in which the struggle seems to be for a larger plasma television rather than for a scrap of food.Regardless of your personal take on the essays, I'd recommend the book as an argument that you should listen to. Agree or disagree.

Good book but the formatting on the Kindle is horrible. Footnotes are all over the place

The content is great. The book edition is poor, there are mistakes on spelling (there are full chapters in which the "i" letters are replaced by "l") and the formatting is poor (the footnotes apear in the middle of the main content).

Fascinating book, even if I disagree with much of it politically.

This landmark of collection of essays is, along with Paul Goodman's "Drawing the Line", perhaps the finest American contribution to Anarchist thought in the latter part of the 20th Century. Bookchin draws on a tremendous wealth of experience as a revolutionary (he got his start as a Communist Party agitator at age 8), and careful study of radical history, ecology, and technology, to put forward the claim that society has for the first time entered onto the threshold of the `post-scarcity' era, an era in which there is sufficient material wealth to provide for the subsistence of all people everywhere. Under these circusmstances, Bookchin argues, the culture of domination and exploitation that grew under conditions of scarcity, want, and competition, can finally give way to an anarchist culture of freedom, localism, community, direct democracy, and human scale.The introduction, and title essay, lay out the particulars of the above argument. The essay "The Forms of Freedom" presents a fascinating capsule history of the spontaneous formation of directly democratic structures of government--factory councils and neighborhood committees-- in revolutionary situations in Paris, Petrograd, Barcelona, and elsewhere, and examines their precursors in the ancient Greeke `polis'. The widely read polemic "Listen, Marxist!", launches a crushing attack on the ideology of the Leninist vanguard groups of the sixties, pointing out the flaws and problems with applying Marx's ideas mechanically to 20th century conditions, and laying bare the inexorable failures of Leninist revolutionaries to deliver on their hollow promises of liberation. Other essays examine ecology and anarchism, technology, and the Paris uprisings of 1968.A tremendously insightful and important collection which is highly instructive for today's social movements.

Fantastic book... Excellent insights into what makes working class prospects dismal, even at their supposed best. If the concept of agency intrigues you, and you have a growing suspicion that dependency is at the root of coercive politics, then this will add a bit of fuel to your fire. Read in conjunction with Chomsky and declare yourself a Libertarian today :).

As Wright sees it, 'The Truth' of the human condition is to be found in natural selection, as described through evolutionary psychology in his early book The Moral Animal: Why We Are, the Way We Are: The New Science of Evolutionary Psychology. And he argues that this truth is uniquely addressed by 'The Way' of Buddhism, or at least naturalistic Buddhism. This 'secular Buddhism' is Buddhism without reincarnation, spirits or gods. Even the concept of complete or lasting enlightenment is held at arms length.Secular, naturalistic Buddhism rests on a few key ideas: the idea that people don't have an essential 'self' (no-self), the idea that dissatisfaction (dukkha) is caused by the 'hedonic treadmill' of pursuit of pleasure and avoidance of pain, and that meditation can help us to get off this treadmill. The philosophical approach is similar to that of Stephen Batchelor in Confession of a Buddhist Atheist and Secular Buddhism: Imagining the Dharma in an Uncertain World.There is a decidedly Gnostic bent to the writing here, right from the beginning, when the movie The Matrix is cited. Here natural selection is the process which holds us in a state of delusion, warps our perceptions of reality, prevents us from experiencing lasting contentment and satisfaction, and keeps us trapped on the hedonic treadmill. And secular-Buddhism is The Way (the 'red pill') that will liberate us from this endless drama of delusion and frustration. This view of evolution stands in marked contrast with that of Wright's previous book, The Evolution of God (Back Bay Readers' Pick), in which biological and cultural evolution are instead 'divine' processes by which the Good becomes manifest in the world. (The God-as-Evolution view is also that of the 'Integral' spirituality of Ken Wilber, Steve McIntosh, and others.)Part of this book is dedicated to showing that the key ideas of secular-Buddhism are scientifically true, through discussion of studies in psychology and neuroscience (an approach shared with Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion, by Sam Harris). This would be more convincing if the studies were cited as a way of evaluating Buddhism against competing theories of well-being, such as modern positive psychology, but the book generally avoids this type of direct comparison. This is reflective of the basic approach of secular-Buddhism: the concepts which don't find support in scientific studies, such as reincarnation, or lasting enlightenment, are abandoned or de-emphasized. Secular-Buddhism is reformulating Buddhism to be more consistent with modern psychology, a dynamic which complicates the question of whether science can be used to show that 'Buddhism is True'.Wright expands on the concept of 'no-self' by presenting a 'modular' model of the mind. The idea is that our mind is composed of modules with different goals, desires, and thought patterns. The modules jostle and compete with each other on the subconscious level. Only when one of them carries a sufficiently strong feeling, do we then become aware of its associated thought on a conscious level. While Wright finds some support for this modular model from the Insight Meditation school, and from psychological research, he formulates it through his own preferred perspective of evolutionary psychology (Darwinian competition within the subconscious mind). Interestingly, the model is extended to suggest how mindfulness can improve our 'self'-control, and to weaken the pull of indulgent or addictive behavior.One of the pleasures of The Evolution of God was its detailed historical examples of the ways in which the 'spiritual marketplace' of competing ideas, and the needs of merchants, kings, and rulers all influenced the development of ancient Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Wright could have also taken this approach with Buddhism, exploring how its history as the state religion of multiple empires has shaped its development over time and place. I was hoping for this, and am disappointed not to find it here. However, Wright instead manages to tackle some pretty subtle philosophical issues, such as the distinction between the Buddhist concept of 'emptiness' (sunyata) and Hindu non-dualism, in a manner that is unusually accessible. He enlivens the discussion with narrative accounts of past conversations and interviews.This book is in many ways a personal account: Wright has found a version of secular-Buddhism that is True for him in his life, and he is bringing us along through his experience and thought process. Unlike many authors on Eastern spirituality, he is in no way trying to present himself as enlightened, or a spiritual teacher or guru. He is refreshingly unpretentious--humorously self-effacing, and transparent about his motivations for writing. And he is a clear writer--he does not try to intimidate us with obtuseness and paradox, even when addressing difficult concepts. The book is not always convincing, but it is engaging, approachable, and thought-provoking.

Like the author, I also went on a ten-day Vipassana meditation retreat nearly twelve years ago. I had a similar experience. I did not last all ten days (I left after seven days - with permission from the teacher) because the commentary that accompanied the retreat was not satisfying the questions that were bubbling up in my mind. Since that time I have struggled to understand and articulate the central tenet of Buddhism - Emptiness. Like the author, I need explanations that are grounded in science and minimize jargon as much as possible. This book is a gift. (And I shall give this book as a gift to my friends and family.) If you are willing to learn and practice mindfulness meditation, reading this book may change your life. This is a tall claim - and I usually refrain from making big claims - but in this case I mean it. Wright uses his personal experience and his art of writing lucidly and eloquently (I also loved Wright’s The Moral Animal) to assimilate wisdom from evolutionary biology and psychology to make this book full of insights and wisdom. A gem.

Like several other reviewers, I found less in this book than is suggested by the title -- but I still found it an interesting and worthwhile book. First off, the "nots". Readers looking for a critical examination of Buddhism, one of the world's great religions, will not find it here. Instead, it examines one type of modern, non-secular Buddhism. Nor will they find a rigorous scientific examination of Buddhism even in that very narrow definition: Wright proposes interesting theories based on natural selections, but doesn't provide much in the way of evidence. So why interesting enough to bother with? Because Wright focuses on meditation as a way of trying to reduce the impact of unproductive patterns of thinking. He traces these patterns to natural selection, in a way which is plausible, if not supported by evidence. As a discussion of why meditation is helpful, I found the book useful. It is also well written and amusing, leaving me interested in reading other works by this author.

Congressman Gutierrez's autobiography is inspiring. He grew up in a family that lived in working poverty and he has lived on both sides of several divides. As a kid, he was considered too brown in the US where he was born and too American in Puerto Rico where his parents moved when Gutierrez was 15. His political coming of age came during the time when the Chicago Democratic Party repudiated and pilloried a fellow Democrat, Harold Washington, because of race. Gutierrez had to fight for opportunities to find/make his own personal and political identity. His house was firebombed after he ran against the Chicago Democratic Party machine in alignment with Harold Washington, but he keeps a true north compass. This means Gutierrez often stands alone in trying to bring about immigration reform so that – as he puts it – hard-working families can remain unified. He has been inventive in finding spaces where he can make a difference. He has been arrested for peaceful protests in favor of immigration reform that have received a lot of press. At the same time, his is the only Congressional office ever authorized by the INS to help immigrants through the arduous process of becoming naturalized citizens – more than 50,000 people have become citizens with the help of his office. He is a Don Quixote but he is tilting at real windmills not fantasy ones.

I enjoyed this book very much. I am Puerto Rican and went through similar things that congressman went through, as a Puerto Rican living in Brooklyn, NY. I learned a lot about the workings of politics. I came out feeling very proud of Congressman Luis Gutierrez. It's a must read not just Puerto Ricans but for any activist who believe on fighting for what is fair, as Comprehensive Immigration.

Engaging from the first paragraph! So proud of yet another Northeastern alum who has made dreams come true for OTHERS as well as himself. Wicked humor that creates vibrant scenes of Chicago, Puerto Rico, and even Washington DC. Bravo !!!!

The writing is heartfelt and unpretentious from someone I admire and with whom I can relate because we are both children of the Puerto Rican diáspora, going back and forth between two worlds. He has champeoned many more just and controversial causes than he relates or takes credit for in the book yet he has maintained his humility and humor. Adelante, Luis!

Congressman Luis Gutiérrez has written a poignant, compelling, and humorous memoir that makes for a very enjoyable read. Those fortunate enough to have been regaled with some of his anecdotes know that Luis Gutiérrez possesses a treasure trove of stories of struggles and perseverance. He has encountered everything from the sublime to the ridiculous. This book shows how he has made it his business not just to ably represent his Congressional district and become a leader on important issues beyond his immediate constituents (e.g. comprehensive immigration reform, civil rights, equality, financial regulatory reform, and others). He has also made it his business to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable in order to help attain what is right and what is just. This book is like a fulfilling meal at your favorite Chinese restaurant. It will satisfy you immensely but will leave you wanting more. Here's hoping that a follow-up to this wonderful memoir is in the works.

I loved its way of introducing children to wildlife at the beaches--often neglected.

This book is perfect for teaching a beach and surrounding habitats! It is great for a teacher to use in the classroom. It is also a great addition to your own child's personal library. I read this to my 4 year old several times before our visit to the beach. She was on the lookout for plants and animals from the book. :)

Love this little book. Henry Cole came to our child's school so this was extra special to own.

Beautiful illustrations and a wonderful story. It’s nice to have a kids book you don’t have to put away when it’s just adults in the room!
