This book had so many twist and turns I could hardly keep up. This book has attempted murder by more than one person, a wasp nest, kidnapping, a bomb, and God leading Kendra and Ethan to realize you can find true love with the person God has chosen for you.

Five stars---excellent read filled with lots of intrigue and romance!!! Great storyline and characters!! Highly recommended for everyone!! Great book that is a faith-based story!

This was an exciting book. I couldnâ€™t put it down. I was sorry for it to be over. I love the dogs and truly admire the K9 â€˜s of all walks of life. The surprise ending was terrific!!!!

This was a fast moving book near the end. Full of suspense and excitement and action and surprises. With a twist that I wasn't expecting.

I love this series and look forward to completing it. While hunting serial killer, Boyd Sullivan, each book has new good guys and new bad guys, making each story interesting on its own.

This was great! Can't wait to read the other books in this series. Each one has so many twists, this one will surprise you.

In my opinion this book has it all...a great plot with a unique twist, 2 strong characters, plenty of villains and lots of unexpected twists and turns.

No doubt when you think of baseball and "Mickey" you think of "The Mick" Mantle. He was a heckuva player. I remember that gofer ball in his last at bat. It was a tribute, and well deserved. But hey, that's not the Mickey who this book is about. That would be Mickey McGuire, a star of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League. She played for the Milwaukee Chicks in 1944, which is when Stosh pays a visit. You may know the league from the movie "A League of Their Own" but even that can't cover the action as well as a good book. And this is a good book. Go for it!

Iâ€™ve followed Medicare Pastorâ€™s journals for a long time and they are some of my favorites. A lot of books are just journals in book form and thatâ€™s okay. Not this one. This book is SO much more. Her stories are much more fleshed out and I enjoyed learning even more about her and her hikes than I knew before. I read it slowly and savored it. I felt like I was on trail and could see what she was seeing. Itâ€™s very well written and I didnâ€™t want it to end!I was honored to be mentioned. At the end of one year she was worried she wouldnâ€™t be able to keep hiking. When I saw the next year that she was coming back to hike, I posted I was glad she was still able.Mary is a huge inspiration to so many. When I see someone on a Facebook group question whether they can hike at an older age or with knee replacements I suggest they look her up. Her grit and determination are a great example of how to live, no matter our age or activity.If you donâ€™t know, Mary started seriously long distance hiking at age 60 and by her mid seventies she had hiked the Triple Crown--AT, PCT and CDT. Additionally, she has hiked two routes of the Camino in Europe and huge portions of the ADT, which crosses the U.S. east to west.

I was excited to receive this book. As a â€œwannabe through hikerâ€ I was looking for a bit more inspiration. I am having difficulties even finishing it. This book is filled with typos and rambling.You â€œmeetâ€ many people throughout the book but learn nothing of them. There is no depth just repetition of laundry, singing nightly prayers, and altitude mentions. Very little in the way of actual experiences.After reading many of the 5 star reviews I noticed that they were trail friends or people who had already read her journals.I will be hard pressed to even finish, hey maybe Iâ€™ll just jump to the end. I really donâ€™t think I would miss much sadly.

Pastor Mary's passion and grittiness enable her to achieve her goal to hike all three big trails, PCT, AT, CDT--the Triple Crown at the age of 76. She finds beauty and blessings no matter the trail conditions or physical challenges faced. Mary writes with a sense of humor that had me enjoying her encounters with her fellow hikers and the wildlife on the trail. She inspires me to live my life to the fullest despite the physical limitations that come with aging.

This book is the story of Mary, who, starting at age 65 and retirement, began hiking the triple crown, which consists of the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and the Continental Divide Trail. The story is that of a fairly remarkable person. As Mary frequently reminds the reader, there are geriatric hikers, although long-distance geriatric backpackers are just slightly more common than that of the Dodo bird.Mary hiked the three long-distance trails never as a thru-hiker, but always as a section hiker. Her choice of sections seem to be somewhat random to me, a portion of the Appalachian Trail, then a portion of the PCT, then back to the AT, then to a completely disjointed segment of the PCT, so on and so forth. She did the CDT as a single entity, but even then, somewhat disjointed, though tending from south to north.The delights of reading this book were that it is fairly incredible (and delightful) that someone her age would do more than past the days in a rocking chair. Even more incredible is that she has had multiple orthopedic proceduresâ€”her bones were just not holding upâ€”and yet she still persisted in hiking. Mary and I both hail from Puyallup, WA, and her spirit reminds me of an old pediatrician in town, P.G., of whom the town even has a statue to him(!), who would spend weeks backpacking in the snow or forest, well into his 80â€™s, long after having had multiple joints replaced.I donâ€™t think I would ever consider doing what Mary has done. True, I plan on thru-hiking the PCT next year as a geriatric wanderer. I have no interest in the random break-up of the trail that she has done. In the course of doing that, she required the support of multiple friends, family and others in order for her to maintain short segments, frequent re-supplies, massive segments slack hiked, and very frequent retreats from the trail to stay in hotels or other places of comfort. Iâ€™m sure the automobile, train and plane use were for at least 2-3x the actual length of the trailâ€”not the best way to go when people are going ape about â€œglobal warmingâ€. Iâ€™d rather leave my more elderly years hiking the Pacific NW, doing as I can without the necessity of going to the other side on the country. But, thatâ€™s me, and Mary has her own wonderful story.I have just a few complaints about the book. Mary claims to have used people to help her edit the book. Iâ€™m not sure they were too careful or critical, as they should have been. There were many, many typos. It was often very difficult to follow exactly where Mary started and stopped the trail, if one really wished to see what she had done. While Mary left out much needed detail about the hike itself, but other details were exceedingly annoying. I really didnâ€™t care to know 20 or more times over that Mary washed her underclothes, and which underclothes she washed; or, her precise meals at her multiple city stops; or, the many times she decided to sing the Holden Evening prayerâ€”she could have just told us once, and then mentioned that she often tended to sing the prayer or wash her clothes, at various times. With editing, the book could have been half the length and far more delightful to read without missing out on critical details of her adventures.I laud Mary for her adventuresome, and willingness to journey outside of her â€œcomfort zoneâ€ on hobbit-like adventures, chasing the rainbow and following her dreams. Mary is an encouragement to many geriatric hikers like myself, and I wish her, as Roy Rogers would say, many happy trails.

After reading Thru Hiking Will Break Your Heart (Carrot Quinn), I was looking for another inspirational hiking tale. While I am impressed that this "little old lady" (as she characterizes herself on every page - ugh!) completed this amazing accomplishment, I was bored and underwhelmed by her account of the trip. Also, as a segment hiker, the tale is very choppy. I don't think I learned anything about hiking the trails, wasn't generally excited by her experiences and the writing and editing left much to be desired. But, hats off to Mary for her accomplishments!

I chose this book to read as I am a woman about to celebrate her 73rd. Birthday in a few days.I could not hike like our author. I am still recovering from a serious fall in the road breaking my shoulder and requiring a plate with 9 screws to put me back together. I had other injuries too. I wouldn't dare to try to hike in our beautiful outdoors at my age.I enjoyed hiking along with Mary in pain or not.What I didn't enjoy or share with Mary was her love for wild flowers. Most I have never heard of. Pictures may have helped.I am grateful that people were kind to an old lady offering some help. When in our 70s we all need help.Thank you Mary Davison for unknowingly taking me along on your hikes.May God bless you.P.s. what are the words to The Holden Prayer?

been a long time fan of alita since i found it in the mid nineties on vhs.

I love the series from a long time ago and was catching up, still a good read.

What happened with this volume? Looks like the author wanted to END the series for some reason (boredom, pursue other projects, etc).I just hope he will retake the series and give it a decent closure that this series deserve (not this one of course).

Yeah I'm confused. 19 volumes to arrive at this? ZOTT achieved what? I don't even call this an ending and feel partly cheated due to the obvious presented open ended possibilities.

Pretty good tho didnt expect this to be final. Wonder if there will be more to come someday soon?

I am assuming my son loves the book since he specifically asked for it as a gift.

In this the final volume of the long, long running Battle Angel Alita/Last Order series the focus remains on the characters left behind on Earth, characters barely seen since the original series wrapped up in the 1990s. They journey across the wastelands of Earth and make their way to space trying to find Alita's fate.It's nice to see closure for some of the characters who made the original run so memorable and honestly if this was not the last volume I'd love it. But there's almost nothing of Alita in it and it makes the long (long, long, long, long) ZOT Tournament and space storyline seem even more of a waste of time.The book leaves things wide open for a sequel but at this point I'm not sure I would care.Kishiro seems to have lost all focus, wandering where ever he feels like at the moment but never developing his stories or characters. While entertaining ideas emerge from time to time, the whole Last Order encore has felt like a pale shadow of the original run. I started reading Battle Angel Alita in the mid-90s and now as it lurches to a close almost 20 years later I kind of wish it had ended with the original run.EDIT - Since I wrote this another sequel has appeared, Battle Angel Alita Mars Chronicles and it's actually pretty good. It more or less ignores all of Last Order though, making this 19 book series even more superfluous.

I bought this text after using and learning about Professor Harrell's contributions through the literature and through the R and S computing communities. Others have written how wonderful Professor Harrell's software is to use, and how carefully he has thought about the entire cycle of doing statistics, including transparent analyses and publication using LaTeX.But the book is a joy, balancing theoretical concerns, a masterful selection of literature, and solid assessments and presentations of actual examples. Professor Harrell demonstrates how powerful these techniques are, and the material moving them. These insights are key in a time when increasingly people want to just dump numbers into a package and get something out of it, an analytical behavior often justified by cost and time pressures. (If it's wrong results you want, it's trivially easy to get those, even if they LOOK wrong.) Professor Harrell shows it needn't be that hard, with tools from the CRAN (the R community source), many good ones which he and colleagues contributed. But he also shows that it's important to keep an eye on the parts of these, and be wary of pitfalls.Professor Harrell is also candid in his assessments, even after giving enthusiasts for a technique he critiques the benefit of the doubt. I find his comparison of cross-validation with bootstrap validation wonderful, and his discussion of standard assessments of models like R^2 refreshing.Check out his lectures, too:[...][...][...]

Informed, experienced update of this classical work on statistics, bringing to it additional years of Professor Frank Harrell, Jr's in-depth experience, rules of thumb, and practicals.

My initial temptation is to say this is the best statistics text ever, but it's all relative. It perfectly suits my current needs and state of development. The book claims to be intended for graduate level students in biostatistics and I think that is a fair assessment (I am self-taught, so how am I to know?).I haven't even finished yet, but I am reading the text cover-to-cover after first perusing parts of chapter 10. This linear approach is facilitated by Prof. Harrell's excellent writing style.The text has a practical bent, but with plenty of theory and references to back up the practical advice. You may find Harrell's views to be controversial. I have been forced to reconsider many of my notions about model-building.I note that "r programming language" is a suggested tag for this product. While Harrell's Design and Hmisc packages are available to R users, the text actually refers to the use of S-PLUS and there may be subtle distinctions. As a Stata user, they're both alien to me, but this hasn't affected my enjoyment of the book.

I found "Regression Modeling Strategies" to be a fantastic treatment of a wide assortment of model selection techniques. Harrell's writing style is quite lucid (assuming you've had graduate-level statistics coursework). Model selection/validation is arguably the most critical component of the statistical literature for many industry statisticians, and it is rare to find a textbook solely devoted to the merging of theory with practice. This is not to discredit other applied statistical texts; they represent a necessary foundation to master before a text like Harrell's can be understood with any depth.It is often said that "All models are wrong but some are useful". To that I would follow with, "In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king". Harrell's text will help empower you as a statistical modeler. Personally, I think combining this book with Gelman and Hill's "Data Analysis" text creates about as good of a 1-2 punch that an applied statistician will ever find.

Frank Harrell's widely-cited "Regression Modeling Strategies" was far ahead of its time and remains very relevant today. The book is a wakeup call that many long-established data analytic practices are problematic.

I'm a graduate student in the life sciences and was looking for a book on multiple logistic regressions. My advisor suggest this book and I have not been disappointed. Harrell does a good job of balancing theory with application throughout the book. The inclusion of S-Plus/R code was also beneficial. Furthermore, I was impressed that the code still worked despite the booking being over a decade old!

If you want to move past the "just use cross validation" stage of your ML work and improve your model's generalization (and understand why and when to use techniques like bootstrapping) this is the book for you.

The overview of design principles described in the first half of the book are interesting. I certainly became more aware of the kinds of poor design choices outlined and certainly learned a few things that will be helpful in my communications and systems development role at work.The explanations of the psychology behind product interaction are, to me, poorly organized and explained. Further, if you've read any psychology or behavioral economics before, there's little to be learned here.Finally, the writing itself is fairly poor. I read nonfiction almost exclusively, so I don't think it's the technical nature of the content; it's just not very engaging. The personal anecdotes, as other reviews have noted, often feel forced and a little self-congratulatory. A better editor would have helped, too. There were quite a few instances of small annoyances such as using "less" where "fewer" was needed, or an overabundance of "as a result" towards the end.

A UX researcher's or designer's bible. If studying human factors engineering, human computer interaction, or any other related field; your professors, peers, and colleagues will reference this book and Don Norman. I keep this on my desk at work and continue to use it when explaining heuristics to clients, engineers or data scientists.

So far, the content is informative and interesting. However, I would think a book about design would be well designed. The section headings on the left sided pages are so far to the right I have to crack the spine all the way open to read many of them. This is so annoying to me I don't know if I can finish reading it. The small, grainy graphics are also dismaying. It's difficult to have confidence in the author's expertise when so little thought is put into the presentation.

This is essential and timeless reading for any designer. It's tough to get through, ironically because it's a book about usability and accessibility in design and it's just oceans upon oceans of text. But Donald Norman is brilliant and the ideas are sound. Consider that the original book was written long before the internet and that the revised edition in the late 90's or early 00's hadn't really gone out of date. The principles are still completely relevant and not dependent on fads or changing technology. If you are an artist, industrial designer, graphic designer, tech industry professional, or just a curious human, read this book. Don't let the Norman door hit you on the way out. (What does that even mean? Well, read the book and find out!)

Its a good book with great examples. It does shed some light on the troubles with design and shows problems from another perspective and it should be rightfully considered as one of the key books regarding design in general. However, It's quite shallow and the author doesn't go into much of a detail. Don't get me wrong, I am not a literary critic or anything but as a European, the style is not a strong suit. People, who are used to the American style of literature are going to be fine, but sometimes there is too much repetition of ideas and a bit deeper analysis of the problem would be beneficial. To sum up. The contribution of the author in the field of proper and functional design is huge and the terminology used is crucial for understanding the key principles of design is paramount. But I would go into a bit more detail.

This book is more of an INTRO or PRE-101 to user/human-centered design. Norman is really good at introducing concepts and painting it with examples. I only wish that this book picked our brains more. There could have been many times he could have displayed the information in fun, amusing, and even trivial ways. It felt like he was giving us the cheat-sheet without doing what great teachers do: use creative means to present the information. This book is a primer, so if you are expecting some sick UX skill-based tips and tricks, you are out of luck. The text is foundational information that helps create a thought-leading designer. In a classroom setting, using this book would be fantastic. It lends some great inspirational food-for-thought for the aspiring designer. There are many broad concepts, each with endless possibilities for lesson plans and teaching material.

A pamphlet may be able to be reduced to a single-page flow chart. It's a Norman book in the same way a terrible door is a Norman door. That assumes its purpose is to inform the reader in a succinct manner, and not generate money for the author who mentions his other works many times throughout. It's exceptionally good at generating revenue; maybe I'm applying his solution to the wrong problem, the correct problem being 'I need money for a boat.'

This book was assigned in a UX/UI college class, and I'm not done with it but I've read enough to know I hate it and honestly can't believe my school treats this book like it's the bible of design or something. I'm used to academic topis being studied with rigor, and this book is 95% one person sharing his opinion and experience (with a few mentions of studies) . In other words it's just anecdotal. And it reads like a crotchety old man who complains about everything. Like, he can find the problem with every design, but doesn't spend half as much time talking about good design.To summarize, I find this book weak regarding the validity of it since it's just one person's opinion, it creates the experience of just listening to someone complains about everything, and doesn't leave me feeling like I'm learning any useful design skills.

I expected there to be a little more inforamtion in the book and more like a mini textbook. It still has a good resource of information. And it has several stories about the writers experinces. Which was very enteratining.It was a well written little book. The seler is selling it at a good price and under what Paladin themselves are selling it for. Some of the Informatiopn is dated since the book was updated around 1997. There should be a new update to this booklet written to give us a current view of what's going on and ways of handling the situation.

A great companion to the Survivalist's Medicine Chest by the same author. If you want to be truly prepared for when SHTF then these two books are a must. I am now enhancing my preparedness with these two books.

This little book may not have the best reviews but it gave me information about pre surgery anesthesia that I haven't been able to find in any other books . For that alone, I give it high marks. The book is mostly about medicines and not so much about surgical procedures.
