A good coverage of the Tiger I and II, but warning, there is a very definite 'British slant' to the coverage. That being said, I should point out that the Author is dead wrong about the 501 and 504 Tiger I units. All the tanks shown in Tunisia are from the 504th, not one of the 501 is shown. Both of these formations have very good individual books out, and I recommend them over this one. None the less, the author does cover a lot of detail concerning both versions of these fearsome tanks. See the book Tigers in the Ardennes by Gregory Walden for better coverage on the Tiger II paint schemes used, both Heer and SS. As for a better source, try Walther Spielberger's excellent series on these tanks for a more balanced coverage. I have read the above mentiones books and consider them far better than this one.
This is a very good book on the famous Tiger tank (both Tiger I and Tiger II). Its 176 pages discusses design development and production, technical details, and deployment. It discusses the prototypes and design predecessors to the eventual Henschel Tiger I. It also discusses the Jagdtiger, Sturmtiger, and Ferdinand / Elefant. There are extensive accounts of combat deployments in North Africa/Tunisia, Russia, Sicily, and of course, in Normandy. Naturally, there is a detailed story of the renowned Villers Bocage battle (pages 103 - 120).There are numerous other books on various aspects of the Tiger tank. Two that I think are especially good are:* "Kingtiger Heavy Tank 1942 - 1945" by Jentz and Doyle (1993). Pages 3 - 8 describe in detail the development and selection of the 88 mm L/71 gun for the King Tiger. Pages 34 - 36 discuss the armor penetrations by the various guns of the Tiger's opponents such as the T-34, Sherman, Cromwell, and Churchill tanks versus the corresponding penetrations by the Tiger II 88 mm L/71.* "Tiger" by Anderson (2013).
Although a WW II aviation history buff, I've recently been reading more about the fascinating armored forces of that incredible conflict. This work does a good job of focusing on the true strengths, and myths, about the Tiger 1 and 2 German machines. A fearsome gun, and superior armor, were often offset by a lack of mobility, mechanical unreliability, and poor tactical use in certain conflicts. In spite of this, the machines in the hands of Germany's top tank aces destroyed enemy tanks and vehicles by the hundreds. There were just not sufficient numbers of the beasts. I also learned about many other German, Allied, and Soviet tanks. There are good details about each, and their relative effectiveness against the Tigers. I want to know more about the Russian Joseph Stalin heavy tank for example. The photos greatly enhance the experience of the Kindle version. I suggest always checking the free sample of a Kindle version before purchasing. Some versions will not have photos. This one does. It is almost worth getting for the photos alone. That Tamiya model of the Tiger 1 I built as a kid was a spark in my interest of German armor. This book was a good "bang for the buck."
This book has some information, new information, on the German Tiger I and Tiger II tank in WWII. The photos I have seen before. The narrative is acceptable although I have some disagreement with some of his (British?) views. For example, I don't think the 17 pdr gun could tackle the Tiger II frontally at 1100 meters as he states. On the other hand, perhaps although he was discussing the Tiger II, his reference may have been to tackling the Tiger I, which would be accurate. The Tiger II appears to have gone through the war without ever having its frontal armor penetrated. He also discusses the three Tiger I tanks modified in Italy as explosive demolition carrier vehicles, mis-identifying them as recovery vehicles. SLEDGEHAMMER is a much better book as are the TIGERS IN COMBAT I and II books.
It’s a wonderful book at a terrific price. Not so much for any really deep study, although except for the hardcore, the text is easy to read and enjoyable and will probably stimulate a desire to read more. But the true strength is all the terrific photos and some color plates. For the modeler, it is a great resource. Lots and lots of photos and diorama ideas.I highly recommend this book. No, again it’s not a in depth technical manual, but it’s worthy for the photographs alone.
