This book was a required text for t a PhD Teaching Principles and Methods seminar - basically, teaching soon-to-be instructors how to teach in higher education. One major focus of the seminar was the composition (and execution) of a course syllabus in a class setting. This work provided some helpful insights into the composition of a syllabus focused more on student learning, rather than course content or even instructor performance. This work has several examples for each potential component an instructor might decide to include in his or her syllabus.

I run an annual conference and a sub-group of this conference is a Doctoral Institute for near-graduate or just-graduated PhDs. This book was one of our gifts to them in their mission to become leading educators in the collegiate classroom.I highly suggest this book if you are a junior academic, or have one in your family.

This is a concise guide to creating syllabi that encourage students to engage in course content and take advantage of resources available to them. I have used suggestions from this book for several courses over the past six years. My students find that a syllabus based on suggestions in the book helps them organize their approach to the course and establish goals for learning. Administrative critiques of my syllabi routinely note clarity of purpose and thoroughness--important aspects for the age of learner-centered paradigms. Examples in the book cover a range of disciplines and course formats.

This is a great resource for new and seasoned faculty alike. After nearly ten years in academia and completing a one-year higher education certification program during my doctoral studies, this book gave me loads of new ideas for my syllabi. I likely added another one to two pages to my 'standard' syllabi text, all of which I believe makes my syllabus a much stronger learning tool without adding any fluff material. Cassandra Gaisford has written an excellent book for those of us who hate their job, have had enough of the long hours, have been made redundant, or just want a new career. She uses examples of many who have become successful in later years.She uses excellent examples as well as exercises to guide you in the process of figuring out your new career. She has exercises that will help you decide what you want to do, exercises that will help you identify your talents, exercises that will help you with every aspect of career change. You are never too old to make a change and everyone has talents whether they know it or not. We all have experiences and interests that can lead to a rewarding career.She guides you through the process with action questions, step by step procedures on what to do to prepare for the change, and many quotes from people who have studied later life career changes and those who have made those changes. She gives you great examples of ways to motivate yourself to learn all you an about what it is you might want to do.This is a book I needed. I have had enough of the long hours in a job that will take me nowhere. I am ready to move on and move up. I recommend it to anyone who is dissatisfied with their current career or job, or whose job has lost them, or anyone who just wants something different. Get this book today and get the life you want before it is too late.

The author uses both her personal experience as a career changer and her professional experience as a career coach to send the message that it’s never too late to make a living doing something we love. She makes the point that it takes effort and optimism to change and shows how to approach the difficult task of making career changes at a later stage of your career. Some great advice and tips for mid-lifers who are stuck, including choosing to view age as an asset and choosing to view setbacks as opportunities. Practical tools to help increase self-awareness and decrease stress and self-assessment quizzes and action questions to make the process easier. I particularly liked the section about people who have achieved success later in their life.

The "book" is mostly anecdotes, pithy statements you can find from inspirational posters, and quotes of other people, with a few quizzes to check if you "really need to change your life's direction". The most offensive thing is how the author shamelessly includes links for you to buy her other books (which one can only assume is more of the same) If you are looking for actual guidance, with concrete steps or suggestions, do not buy this book.

Cassandra Gaisford's book, Mid-Life Career Rescue, puts passion first, exactly where it should be! She gently nudges us out of complacency by reminding us our career doesn't have to be life-draining if we are willing to take time figuring out what we want and the skills we have to actually do it. And then brilliantly she provides all the action steps we need to make a move by asking simple, yet powerful questions to help us find the answers already there inside of ourselves.I definitely recommend reading the chapter on stress in her book. I wish I had the valuable information she laid out 15 years ago when I went through a 'brown out'," one step before complete 'burn out.' If I knew what physical signs to look for I would have left that job way earlier than I did. Unfortunately for me I learned the hard way what a stressful job situation can do to you both mentally and physically, but you don't have to. Instead, you just need to read Mid-life Rescue, and follow the advice of Ms. Gaisford.

This book shared some interesting experiences that sparked a mildly inspiring "me too" response, but there were relatively few corresponding insights and treatment of the subject matter primarily basic and anecdotal. I also felt that significant effort was given to attempting to convince the reader of the author's credibility, which detracted from the book's impact. If available, I would give 3.7 stars. :-)

I found this to be an inspiring read and highly recommend it. I recently left a job where I was successful, but not creatively fulfilled. This book offers value to anyone who finds themselves in a situation where they feel stuck and dissatisfied. This book is terrific for career-changers, retirees, people laid off, and those just seeking to be happier in their current job. After reading Gaisford's book, I am starting a passion journal ASAP! She offers not only this terrific idea, but gives you a tip sheet that you can download as well. I will also be sure to read her first book, too. Read this book if you want to get inspired, get your career on track, and ultimately live a happier life.

This book was fabulous, detail oriented but with a narrative that kept me reading and engaged. It offers a good overview of St. Francis' life and a check in on those places he went with the author. Francke is not outdoorsie, I was surprised by how not into the outdoors she was, but that didnt take away from the book.

Interesting book. Not everything in it jives with the history of Francis that I hae been taught by Franciscan scholars so I would suggest the reader not use this book as the be all and end all regarding Saint Francis's life and journeys. Primarily it gives the reader a sense of this area of Italy.

This is a marvelous book to read before and during one's trip to Assisi. A beautiful companion and travel log - sure to enrich your travels.

The author chose a refreshingly unusual "travelogue" approach to what was, for me, at its core, a deeply spiritual journey. Also appreciated her sensitivity to nuances of place, people, cuisine and "time past and passing"...

What a fabulous idea that Linda Francke had - combining an account of the life of the greatest Saint with a story of her own spiritual journey with a travel guide. A teacher in high school (a Jesuit) once told me that we don't all have to live like St. Francis, but we should all be willing to invite him into our busy live occasionally and allow him to ask us some tough questions. This book is a pleasant and thought-provoking way to do just that.

My grandson is in Mongolia (who would have thought) doing just that for the next two years.I loved the chapter on Polygamy which has always been my belief in monogamy. I'm not so sure about the Coming Revolution Inside Mormonism as I don't see in Utah what you might be seeing in California. (I'm not a native.) Anyway, your book was not really about that, in my opinion. The best thing about your book was that it was personal. You weren't afraid to disclose yourself. That is always a good read, especially when many of the Church books are about changing ourselves which you seem to have already accomplished (I realize you are not yet perfect as none of us are). Keep up the good work. Thanks for writing the book.

His accuracy in naming things that are now being officially addressed by the leaders of the church is amazing.An enjoyable read! In this I admit I am insanely envious of the talented Mr. Kevin Sharkey given carte blanche in Martha's gorgeous gardens, lucky duck!Unfortunately I don't have the space to gush over every single arrangement as I'd like, I will say that I have gleaned numerous fabulous ideas for my future flower arrangements. And happily expanded my gardening 'chores' with this creative book.
